Spotlight Coloring: Adding Drama and Focus to Your Handmade Cards
Creating handmade cards allows us to express our creativity and share heartfelt messages with loved ones. One technique that adds drama, intrigue, and a touch of artistic flair to your card designs is spotlight coloring. This technique draws attention to a specific area or element on the card, creating a focal point that instantly captures the viewer's eye. In this blog post, we'll explore the wonderful world of spotlight coloring and discover how you can incorporate it into your own card making endeavors.

What is Spotlight Coloring?
Spotlight coloring is a technique where you selectively color a specific area or element of your card design, while leaving the rest in black and white or with minimal color. By highlighting just one area, you create a striking contrast and draw attention to the colored portion, making it the star of the show.

Choosing the Perfect Image or Element:
To make the most of spotlight coloring, select an image or element that you want to feature prominently on your card. It can be a flower, a sentiment, a character, or any other element that speaks to the theme or message of your card. Here I picked the center of the stamped apples card front that I stamped using the Apple Harvest Stamp Set from Stampin' Up! unto a piece of Crumb Cake Cardstock.
Creating the Spotlight Effect:
There are various ways to achieve the spotlight effect. Here are a few popular techniques:

Masking Technique: Use masking paper or masking tape to cover the areas you want to keep black and white. This allows you to color only the desired area without affecting the rest of the card.
Die-cutting Technique: Cut out a shape or frame from your card panel using a die. Color only the image or element inside the shape, leaving the surrounding area uncolored or in a different shade. Which is what I did with today's card.
Stenciling Technique: Position a stencil over your card panel and apply color only to the area covered by the stencil. This creates a spotlight effect by emphasizing the stenciled design.
Choosing Your Coloring Medium:
Spotlight coloring works well with various coloring mediums such as markers, colored pencils, watercolors, or even ink blending. Experiment with different mediums to achieve the desired effect and showcase your coloring skills.

Enhancing the Spotlight:
To further enhance the spotlight effect, consider adding additional elements like shading, highlights, or texture to the colored area. This will make the spotlighted element stand out even more.

Spotlight coloring is a captivating technique that adds depth, dimension, and visual interest to your handmade cards. It allows you to guide the viewer's gaze and emphasize the most important element of your design. Incorporate spotlight coloring into your card making repertoire and watch as your creations come to life with stunning focal points. Don't be afraid to experiment, unleash your creativity, and share your spotlight-colored masterpieces with friends, family, and fellow crafters!
I hope this blog post has inspired you to try spotlight coloring on your next handmade card project. Share your spotlight-colored creations with us on social media using the hashtag #SpotlightColoring. Happy crafting!
