Create a Sassy Friendship Card with The Rabbit Hole Designs August New Release

There's something special about creating a card that makes someone laugh before they even open the envelope. Friendship cards don't always have to be elegant or heartfelt—sometimes the best ones are a little quirky, a little unexpected, and full of personality. That's exactly what inspired this project featuring the August New Release from The Rabbit Hole Designs.

As cardmakers, we often focus on birthdays and holidays, but I think friendship cards deserve just as much attention. They give us the chance to celebrate the people who brighten our everyday lives, and a playful image paired with a witty sentiment is often all it takes to bring a smile to someone's face.

For this card, I wanted the colorful background to feel just as fun and energetic as the adorable caffeinated unicorn. The result is a clean and simple design that still feels bold, playful, and full of movement.

Let the Background Tell Part of the Story

One of my favorite ways to create visual interest is by combining a clean layout with a vibrant focal area. Instead of filling every inch of the card front, I allowed plenty of white space while letting the colorful Getting Inky 6x6 Paper Pack become part of the overall design.

The rainbow alcohol ink-inspired pattern instantly draws your eye across the card, creating energy without adding extra layers or complicated techniques. Because the pattern already has so much movement, the rest of the design can stay fairly simple.

This is a design principle I come back to often:

When one element is bold, let the other elements support it instead of competing with it.

That balance keeps the finished card looking polished rather than overwhelming.

Choosing a Focal Point That Pops

The star of this card is the adorable unicorn from the Caffeinated Critters – Limited Edition Set 2. I colored the image with alcohol markers, keeping the rainbow palette playful while allowing the pink robe to become an instant focal point.

One thing I love about alcohol markers is how easily they let you customize a stamped image. Even simple coloring can completely change the personality of a character.

If you're just getting comfortable with alcohol markers, don't worry about using dozens of shades. A few coordinating colors with simple light and dark blending can create beautiful results. The goal isn't perfection—it's creating enough contrast that your image stands out against the background.

Because the patterned paper already contains every color of the rainbow, I repeated many of those same colors in the unicorn's mane. Repeating colors throughout a design is an easy way to make a card feel cohesive without much extra effort.
