Some cards just make you smile the whole time you’re creating them, and this one was definitely one of those projects. I knew the Prost! Stamps & Die Bundle from The Rabbit Hole Designs would be perfect for a playful fall card, and once I paired it with the Oh Duck! Stencil, the ideas started flowing. There’s something so fun about creating a design that looks detailed and full of personality but is actually really approachable to make. I love projects like this because they remind me of the first time I started experimenting with scene-style backgrounds—it felt a little intimidating at first, but once I leaned into layering inks and textures, everything clicked into place.

A Festive Duck Gathering

The stars of this card are those adorable ducks in their Oktoberfest outfits from the Prost! Stamps and Dies Bundle. I stamped each one using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink on Bristol Smooth Cardstock and brought them to life with Tombow Dual Brush Pens. These markers are one of my favorites when I want bright colors that still blend beautifully. The best part? With the coordinating dies in the Prost! Bundle, I didn’t have to worry about fussy cutting—I could just focus on the fun part: coloring.

Pro Tip: When you’re coloring multiple images for one card, stamp them all at the same time. Even if you don’t use them all, you’ll have extras ready for another project, and it saves so much time.

Creating a Background that Pops

I wanted the background to feel festive without distracting from the ducks, so I started with the Oh Duck! 6 x 6 Stencil. I ink blended through it with Emerald Ink, then layered Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Inks over the top. By leaving a lighter highlight in the center, the ducks automatically draw the eye once they’re added. A quick spritz of water and some lifting with a paper towel gave the panel that classic textured look.

It’s funny—when I first started ink blending, I was heavy-handed and ended up with muddy results. Over time, I learned that a little restraint with layering makes all the difference. I always tell crafters: let the inks do the work for you. The colors will blend together naturally if you give them time.

Finishing the Card with Fun Details

The sentiment “Cute Enough to Yodel at” from the set made me laugh out loud, so of course it had to be front and center. I stamped it in Emerald Ink on a skinny white strip to break up the background, and then used foam squares to arrange my ducks around it. Dimension is key here—without it, the characters would get lost against the bold background.

To finish things off, I added white gel pen highlights to the ducks and a touch of Star Dust Stickles on their beer foam. It’s a small detail, but that little sparkle takes the card from cute to extra-special.

Pro Tip: Don’t underestimate white gel pen highlights. Just a few lines or dots on your stamped images can add instant life and dimension. It’s like the difference between a flat illustration and one that really pops off the page.

Why This Design Works

This card may look like it has a lot going on, but the design is actually really simple. The stencil adds texture, the ink blending frames the characters, and the foam adhesive makes them the star of the show. If you’ve ever struggled with how to make character stamps shine, try giving them a textured background and just a little lift off the card front. It’s an easy solution that makes a big impact.

I hope this project inspires you to pull out your playful stamps and experiment with backgrounds that complement them. Sometimes the best designs come from pairing something bold with something whimsical—it keeps the whole process lighthearted and fun, which is exactly what cardmaking should be.
