Sometimes a Halloween card needs more than a spooky stamped image to make an impact! For this project, I wanted the card base itself to become part of the design. That is what I love about a diamond stair step fun fold card—it gives you multiple layers, angles, and surfaces to work with, creating a dimensional handmade card before you even begin decorating it. For this Halloween design, the combination of the bold black cardstock, patterned paper, and adorable character image creates a card that feels playful and spooky while still giving the focal image plenty of attention.

The diamond shape was really the creative starting point for this card. Instead of thinking of the card front as one flat surface, I looked at the different sections of the stair step base as opportunities to build a scene. The large center diamond naturally became the focal area, while the stepped sections around it helped frame the design. This is one reason I enjoy using fun fold cardmaking techniques: the structure can help make design decisions easier because the card base already gives you a sense of where different elements belong.

I used the Trickster Ghost Stamp Set, coordinating Trickster Ghost Outline Dies, and papers from the Trickster Ghost 6x6 Paper Pack from Scrappy Boy Stamps. I chose the spider web pattern for the center because it created a strong Halloween background without competing too much with the stamped character. The darker cemetery-themed pattern paper worked beautifully on the surrounding panels, helping to create contrast and visually push the center diamond forward. When working with a dimensional card design like this, I think contrast is especially important because it helps each layer remain visible instead of blending into the one behind it.

Why the Coloring Works with This Fun Fold Design

For the stamped image, I colored with Ohuhu Honolulu Alcohol Markers, keeping the colors relatively soft compared to the bold patterned papers. That was a deliberate choice. When you have a busy background, a brightly colored or heavily shaded focal image can sometimes get lost in everything else happening on the card. By using more muted tones for the character, the image still has dimension and personality, but the overall card feels balanced. This is a helpful idea to remember when combining alcohol marker coloring with patterned paper: you do not always have to use every color in the background when choosing your marker palette.

You Can Adapt This Idea with Supplies You Already Own

One of the best things about a diamond stair step fun fold card is that the basic concept can be adapted for almost any occasion. If Halloween is not your style, imagine this same structure with Christmas patterns, floral papers, birthday designs, or even masculine-themed papers. You can also substitute the center diamond with a die-cut shape, a large sentiment, or a favorite stamped image from your collection. A score board and paper trimmer are helpful for creating a precise card base, but the decorating possibilities are completely open to interpretation.

If you are newer to fun fold cards, my biggest encouragement is not to feel that every surface needs to be covered or heavily decorated. The folds and angles already provide plenty of visual interest! Choose one area to be the star of the card and let the remaining sections support that focal point with coordinating paper, color, or simple stamping. For me, this project is a great reminder that changing the shape and structure of a handmade card can be just as creative as changing the stamps and techniques you use.
