Easy Sassy Friendship Cardmaking Tutorial with Stamping and Alcohol Markers

There's something about a humorous friendship card that never goes out of style. Whether it's celebrating a lifelong friend or sending a little encouragement to someone who appreciates your sense of humor, a card that brings a smile is always worth making. I love creating cards that combine playful images with witty sentiments because they're memorable, personal, and often become keepsakes.

For this card, I wanted the sentiment to be the star of the show, while still giving the adorable shark from The Rabbit Hole Designs Caffeinated Critters Limited Edition Stamps and Die Set 2 plenty of personality. Pairing a grumpy-looking shark holding a bright orange coffee mug with a sarcastic friendship sentiment creates a fun contrast that instantly tells a story.

Let the Background Do the Heavy Lifting

One of my favorite ways to create a clean and simple card without it feeling empty is to rely on a bold background element. Instead of filling every inch of the card with embellishments or layers, I chose a piece from the Getting Inky 6x6 Paper Pack that already had plenty of movement and visual interest.

The rich blue alcohol ink-inspired pattern creates the feeling of ocean waves without needing any ink blending or mixed media techniques. It's a great reminder that patterned paper isn't just for mats and layers—it can become the focal point of your design.

Using an eye-catching paper like this saves time while still giving your card plenty of impact. It's also a wonderful option if you enjoy the look of alcohol ink backgrounds but don't necessarily enjoy creating them yourself.

Why the Coloring Works

Whenever I color whimsical images, I try to keep the palette simple. Limiting yourself to just a few coordinating colors helps the finished card feel cohesive and polished.

For this shark, I stayed with shades of blue that echoed the patterned paper while adding just one unexpected pop of color—the bright orange coffee mug. Because orange and blue sit opposite one another on the color wheel, that tiny splash of warm color immediately draws your eye to the character.

This is a design principle I use often when making handmade cards. If everything is colorful, nothing really stands out. Giving your focal image one contrasting accent color creates a natural visual stopping point.

Creating Balance with a Simple Layout

Although the background is bold, the overall layout remains clean and uncluttered. The shark image sits slightly left of center, while the sentiment anchors the lower right portion of the card. This creates visual balance without making the design feel rigid.

I also intentionally left plenty of white space near the top of the card. White space isn't wasted space—it's what allows your eye to rest and keeps a detailed background from feeling overwhelming.

To finish everything off, I added a few coordinating blue gems in opposite corners. Small embellishments like these help lead your eye around the card while adding just enough sparkle without distracting from the focal image.

Make This Design Your Own

One of the things I enjoy most about layouts like this is how adaptable they are. Once you understand why the design works, it's easy to recreate with supplies you already own.

Here are a few ideas to make it your own:

• Swap the shark for another favorite critter while keeping the same layout.

• Use floral, geometric, or watercolor patterned paper instead of an alcohol ink design.

• Change the sentiment to create a birthday, thank-you, or encouragement card.

• Try colored cardstock instead of white for a completely different mood.

• Skip the gems for a more masculine look or add sequins if you want extra sparkle.

This is one of those sketches that works with almost any stamp set because the patterned paper provides so much of the visual interest.
