Some cards practically make themselves—and this was one of those projects. I was in the mood to create something lighthearted and imaginative, and the Dragon Fun Bundle from The Rabbit Hole Designs had been sitting on my desk just waiting for the right idea to strike. I’m not usually drawn to whimsical characters right away, but something about these little dragons felt like they needed their own adventure. And just like that, the idea of a “Dragon Training Day” encouragement card was born. It’s a fun way to send a little motivation with a playful twist—perfect for kids, fantasy-lovers, or anyone going through a challenge that calls for a bit of bravery and magic.

Fun Dragon Training Day Encouragement Card | Dragon Fun Bundle:

A Sky Full of Possibilities

To start setting the scene, I knew I wanted a dreamy, soft background that would let those dragons shine. I reached for a half sheet of Neenah Solar White 80 lb Cardstock and did some ink blending using Waterfall Ink from PinkFresh Studio. I tried one of their 1-inch blending brushes, which was a little different from the style I normally use, but once I got used to the motion, it blended like a dream—especially for soft, airy backgrounds like this one.

To build in even more movement and whimsy, I layered on the Clouds In My Coffee 6 x 6 Stencil—also from The Rabbit Hole Designs. It’s subtle but adds just enough to suggest a breezy sky where dragons might be swooping and soaring during training drills.

Pro Tip: If you're using new blending tools, try swatching them on a scrap piece before going to your project. The feel is slightly different between brands, and a quick test helps you avoid harsh edges or over-blending.

Dragons with Personality

I couldn’t resist stamping out all the dragons from the Dragon Fun Bundle onto another sheet of Neenah 80 lb Cardstock and coloring them in with my Ohuhu Brush Markers. Each little character just begged for their own color story. One of my favorites ended up in blues and golds, which gave it a bit of a royal look—like a seasoned flyer helping the younger ones learn the ropes.

The coordinating dies made cutting them out a breeze. I love when stamps and dies are this well-matched—it makes the whole process smoother and quicker, especially when you're building a full scene.

Pro Tip: When you have several images to color, try batching them together and putting on a podcast or music. It helps the process feel relaxing instead of tedious, and you can really get into the zone.

Scene-Building with Unexpected Elements

Once I had my dragons ready, I needed a focal point that tied the whole idea together. I pulled out my Nested Hexagon Dies (from SBC) and cut one from a scrap of black cardstock to act as a kind of "training ring" for the dragons to fly around. It added structure to the layout without overwhelming the playful feel.

To ground the design and add texture, I wrapped a bit of natural burlap twine around the ring, letting the tail end trail to the back of the card front. Then I used 2mm foam adhesive strips to pop the hexagon up for some subtle depth.

The entire background panel was cut with the largest die from the You’ve Been Framed Die Set (also from The Rabbit Hole Designs), which gave the card an elegant border while letting that ink-blended sky stay center stage.

Encouraging Words & Magical Finishing Touches

For the sentiment, I stamped “May Your Day Be Filled With Adventure” from the Dragon Fun Bundle directly beneath the hexagon ring using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink. This ink gives such a crisp, rich black—perfect for grounding a design like this.

Then came the fun part—adding my little dragons! I used foam adhesive behind them too, so they look like they’re leaping off the card. I placed one flying into the frame, another in flight, and a third resting just on the edge all tired out from the training; and the fourth like it’s watching the others train.

To finish the card, I sprinkled a few Magic Rocks Rhinestones from Trinity Stamps across the front. They catch the light beautifully and give just the right amount of sparkle—like enchanted crystals floating in the sky.

Wrapping It All Up

This card ended up being such a joyful little project. It’s lighthearted, colorful, and filled with encouragement—and that’s something we could all use more of. I think what I loved most was how the playful design still allowed for thoughtful details, from the twine texture to the shaped frame.

So if you're ever looking for a way to break out of the usual card themes and try something that feels a little more adventurous, give the Dragon Fun Bundle a spin. It’s a great reminder that crafting doesn’t have to be serious to be meaningful—and sometimes a smile from a dragon is just what someone needs.

Until next time, happy crafting and may your creativity take flight.
