There’s just something about Halloween that makes me want to mix a little whimsy with my crafting. Maybe it’s the playful decorations, or maybe it’s that I still remember dressing up as a cat when I was little—whiskers drawn on with eyeliner and a tail safety-pinned to my black leggings. That memory came back to me as I was making today’s card, and I couldn’t resist creating this “Meowgical” scene with The Rabbit Hole Designs’ Meowgical Stamp Set and coordinating Outline Dies. It’s the perfect blend of cute, seasonal, and just a little bit magical.

Halloween Is Meowgical: Cute Kitty in a Pumpkin Card

The Charm of a Softly Stamped Image

When I sat down to make this card, I wanted the kitty in the pumpkin to look soft and playful, not harsh or overly bold. Instead of reaching for my usual black ink, I stamped the image with Memento Toffee Crunch Ink on Canson XL Watercolor Paper. This gives the outline a gentler look that blends beautifully once you start coloring.

Here’s a little pro tip: if you ever feel like your stamped critters look too “harsh,” try a lighter ink. It softens the finished image and makes your coloring look more polished, almost like a storybook illustration.

Watercoloring with Distress Reinkers

For coloring, I pulled out my Distress Reinkers and used them as watercolors. They’re one of my favorite secret weapons in the craft room. You get that bold, vibrant pigment of Distress Inks, but with all the flexibility of watercolor. It’s also a great way to stretch supplies you already have.

The pumpkin came to life with those rich oranges, and I couldn’t resist adding a little shadow and highlight to make it look dimensional. I even pulled in a few white gel pen details at the end to brighten things up. The kitty’s soft brown fur made the perfect contrast to the bold orange of the pumpkin, giving the design balance without overpowering it.

Building the Background Magic

Instead of creating a busy scene, I went with something simple but eye-catching: a circle spotlight background. I used one of the Background Basics Stencils from Penny Black to mask off the area and blended on shades of green Distress Inks. This created the perfect “spooky glow” behind where the pumpkin would be placed.

To make things a little more playful, I stamped a spiderweb and a few dangling spiders inside the circle. That tiny detail adds so much character without taking away from the focal point. The best part? This circle-background trick works with almost any critter or image you want to spotlight.

Bringing It All Together

Once everything was colored, blended, and stamped, it was time to assemble. I used the coordinating Meowgical Outline Dies to cut out the kitty-in-a-pumpkin image, then popped it up on the background with foam adhesive. The main panel was trimmed down slightly and adhered to a crisp white card base with more foam tape for added dimension.

A sprinkle of Suncatcher Rhinestones added just enough sparkle to catch the light. For me, rhinestones are one of those finishing touches that make a card feel complete, like adding earrings to an outfit.

A Simple Formula for Standout Cards

What I love about this design is how approachable it is. You don’t need complicated techniques or hours of work to make something that looks polished and unique. The formula is simple:

  • A softly stamped focal image

  • Vibrant watercoloring (or any coloring medium you love)

  • A spotlight background with a playful detail

  • A sentiment that ties it all together

If you ever feel stuck or overwhelmed, remember that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel with every card. This type of layout can become a go-to design in your craft room. Just swap out the critter or the background colors, and you’ll have endless variations.
