There’s something about a bright, cheerful friendship card that never goes out of style. Whether you're celebrating a lifelong friendship, sending a little encouragement, or simply letting someone know you're thinking of them, a handmade card has a way of making those moments feel even more meaningful.
When I sat down to create this card using the new Strawberry Delight Stamp Set from the July 2026 Berries & Buccaneers Release from C. C. Designs, I wanted the finished design to feel playful without becoming overwhelming. The adorable characters naturally become the focal point, so my goal was to build a scene and background that supported them while still adding plenty of color and interest.

Let the Characters Tell the Story
One of my favorite things about character stamps is how quickly they create a story. Instead of treating each image as a separate embellishment, I like to think about how the characters interact with one another.
For this card, placing the two girls together instantly creates the feeling of friendship. Their cheerful expressions and coordinated strawberry-inspired outfits already communicate so much, so I didn't feel the need to add lots of extra embellishments. Sometimes allowing the stamped images to carry the design creates a stronger focal point than filling every empty space.
When working with character stamps, I often ask myself one simple question:
What do I want someone to notice first?
Answering that question helps guide every other design decision—from color choices to background layers.

Why Pattern Paper Works So Well Here
Pattern paper can sometimes feel intimidating because it's easy to worry about mixing prints that compete with one another. Instead of thinking about matching patterns, I focus on matching color families.
The strawberry-themed papers from the Echo Park Strawberry Fields 6x6 Paper Pad already share similar reds, pinks, and soft greens, making it much easier to combine multiple designs on one card. Even though there are several patterns visible, they feel cohesive because they share a consistent color palette.
This is a great reminder that you don't need an entire themed collection to recreate this idea. Look through your own paper stash for papers that share similar colors, even if they're from different manufacturers or collections. Coordinating colors often matter more than coordinating themes.

Soft Backgrounds Help Your Coloring Shine
Whenever I spend time coloring images with alcohol markers, I want that effort to stand out.
Instead of creating a heavily detailed background, I used simple ink blending with grassy and cloudy stencils to suggest an outdoor setting. Soft blended skies and grassy hills provide just enough context without competing with the colored images.
This is one of my favorite ways to create scene cards because it keeps the focus exactly where it belongs—on the stamped images you've spent time bringing to life.
It's also surprisingly forgiving. Soft ink blending doesn't require perfect lines or precision, making it an excellent technique for both beginners and experienced cardmakers.

Don't Be Afraid to Mix Techniques
One thing I enjoy most about cardmaking is that techniques don't have to stay in separate categories.
This card combines:
Stamping
Alcohol marker coloring
Ink blending
Stenciling
Pattern paper layering
Each technique contributes something different to the overall design without making it feel complicated. The pattern paper adds personality, the ink blending creates depth, and the alcohol markers bring the characters to life.
If you're ever wondering whether you're "using too many techniques," think about whether each one serves a purpose. When every element supports the overall design, multiple techniques can work together beautifully.

Make It Your Own
The layout for this card is easy to adapt using supplies you already have.
You could:
Swap strawberries for flowers, pumpkins, or apples to fit another season.
Replace the friendship sentiment with a birthday, thank you, or thinking of you greeting.
Use your favorite patterned papers while keeping the same layered layout.
Color the characters in completely different color palettes to match the recipient's favorite colors.
That's one of the things I love most about sketch-inspired layouts—they provide a starting point while leaving plenty of room for your own creativity.

A Sweet Reminder About Handmade Cards
Sometimes the most memorable cards aren't the ones with the fanciest techniques or the most elaborate designs. They're the ones that make someone smile the moment they open the envelope.
This strawberry-themed friendship card reminds me that bright colors, adorable images, and thoughtful layering can work together to create something that's both playful and heartfelt. Whether you're creating with the newest release or reaching into your existing stash, the same design principles apply: choose a strong focal point, keep your colors cohesive, and let each layer support your story.
I hope this project inspires you to pull out your favorite character stamps, mix a few patterned papers together, and create a handmade friendship card that reflects your own style. After all, the best part of cardmaking isn't copying a design—it's making it uniquely yours.
