There is something especially fun about creating a handmade card that tells a little story before the recipient even reads the sentiment. When I started working with the Surprise Mail Stamp Set from the Simon Says Stamp STAMPtember® release, I knew I wanted the mailbox to be the center of attention. From there, the colorful envelopes, gift, and scattered pieces of mail became a playful way to build a birthday scene that feels cheerful without becoming overly complicated. Sometimes a card design does not need lots of layers or elaborate techniques—it just needs a clear focal point and a few details that support the story.

For this card, I focused on building interest through masking and scene arrangement. The mailbox needed to feel like the main character, while the envelopes and birthday mail helped create movement around it. Masking is one of those stamping techniques that can look complicated at first, but its real value is simply helping images appear to sit in front of or behind one another. It is a wonderful technique to reach for when you want individual stamped images to feel connected instead of looking like they were placed separately on the card front.

I also made a deliberate choice to keep the background relatively simple. A soft blue ink-blended sky and a touch of green at the bottom gave the scene a place to live without competing with the colorful images. This is something I think about often when creating a clean and simple card: simple does not have to mean plain. A lightly blended background can add atmosphere and depth while still allowing the stamped images to remain the stars of the design.

The alcohol marker coloring was another opportunity to control the overall look of the card. Rather than using lots of different colors everywhere, I kept the mailbox in neutral tones and used brighter colors on the envelopes and gift. This creates contrast and naturally directs your eye toward the fun birthday details. You could easily adapt this idea using colored pencils, watercolor markers, or any coloring medium you already enjoy. The important lesson is not the specific markers I used—Ohuhu Honolulu Alcohol Markers in this case—but thinking about where your strongest colors will have the most impact.

Let Your Supplies Tell the Same Story

One of my favorite things about this design is how easy it would be to recreate the concept with supplies already in your stash. You do not need a mailbox stamp to make a colorful mail-themed handmade card. Look for images that suggest a story or create a central focal point—perhaps a house, a package, a balloon bouquet, or even a large floral image. Then add smaller stamped images around it to create a sense of interaction and movement. The same design thinking works whether your stamps are brand-new or have been sitting in your collection for years.

This project is also a good reminder that combining techniques does not mean every technique needs to be the focus. Here, the stamping creates the scene, masking gives it depth, alcohol marker coloring adds personality, and ink blending quietly supports everything else. When I approach a card this way, I am not trying to showcase as many techniques as possible. Instead, I think about what each technique contributes to the finished design. That approach can make cardmaking feel much less overwhelming, especially when you are looking at a stamp set and wondering where to begin.
