I always love creating cards that feel playful and full of energy, and this Halloween card was one of those projects that just made me smile the whole way through. As soon as I pulled out the Vampy Family Stamp Set from C. C. Designs, I knew I wanted to pair those adorable little characters with some bold pattern papers. The Spooky Things Paper Pack was the perfect match—it’s packed with polka dots, plaids, and playful prints that are just begging to be mixed together. The end result? A card that feels festive, fun, and a little bit mischievous—just like Halloween itself.

Bringing Characters to Life with Copic Coloring
One of my favorite parts of working with character stamps is watching them come to life through coloring. For this card, I used my Copic markers to not only add shading and personality but also to tie everything back to the patterned paper. This is a little trick I use all the time—if your card features bold papers, try pulling those colors into your stamped images. It instantly makes the whole design feel cohesive.
For example, the big polka dot paper in the background had a strong mix of orange, purple, and teal. I made sure to bring those same tones into the characters’ clothing and accessories. A little pop of orange on a shirt, a touch of teal on the shoes, and suddenly everything feels like it belongs together.
Pro Tip: Keep your patterned paper close while you color. I like to swatch a few markers on scrap cardstock and hold them up against the paper before I commit. It saves a lot of second-guessing and helps avoid colors that might clash.

Mixing Pattern Papers Without the Overwhelm
Mixing three different patterned papers can feel intimidating, but the trick is balance. I chose one large, bold pattern (the oversized polka dots), one smaller pattern (the orange dots), and one neutral, structured pattern (the plaid). Each of these papers plays a role without overpowering the others.
Think of it like getting dressed—if you’re wearing a bold patterned shirt, you probably don’t pair it with equally bold patterned pants. The same concept applies to cardmaking. Give each paper its moment and let one of them be the star of the show. In this case, the big polka dots immediately draw your eye, while the plaid and smaller dots add support and depth.
Pro Tip: When in doubt, use white cardstock or solid mats to break up busy patterns. That little bit of breathing room can make the difference between a card that feels overwhelming and one that feels polished.

A Sentiment That Shines
With all the playful patterns and bright coloring, I wanted the sentiment to be clean and simple. I stamped “Sending Snuggles & Smiles” on a crisp white strip and placed it across the bottom of the card. That white strip not only grounds the design but also gives your eye a place to rest.
I’ve found that when I’m working with busier designs, a simple sentiment strip can really help balance things out. It doesn’t compete with the rest of the card, but it still stands out enough to deliver the message clearly.

Final Thoughts
Halloween cards don’t always have to be spooky—they can be sweet, silly, and full of joy. By combining the Vampy Family Stamp Set with the bold prints from the Spooky Things Paper Pack, I was able to create a card that feels festive without being scary. Add in some thoughtful Copic coloring to tie everything together, and you’ve got a design that’s both fun to make and fun to send.

If you’ve ever struggled with mixing patterned papers or worried about making them work together, I encourage you to give this approach a try. Let one pattern lead, support it with smaller designs, and pull your colors together with your markers. Before long, you’ll feel more confident mixing and matching, and your cards will have that extra bit of charm that makes them shine.
