Have you ever created a card layout you absolutely loved and wished you could use it again without making the next card look exactly the same? That's one of my favorite creative challenges in cardmaking! I love finding ways to take a design I already enjoy and give it a completely different personality with new stamped images, colors, and patterned papers. For these two Christmas cards, I partnered with Unity Stamp Company to explore the idea of 2 Christmas cards, 1 layout using the Snowbody's Normal Funny Snowman Stamp Set, The Merry Looky-Loos: Funny Reindeer Stamp Set, and two festive paper collections. The result is a cheerful snowman card and a playful reindeer card that share a design foundation but each have their own personality.

Why One Layout Can Create Two Different Christmas Cards

When I approach a card design, I like to think about the overall composition before getting caught up in individual embellishments. For this project, I wanted the stamped images to be the stars of the show, with patterned paper and cardstock layers supporting them rather than competing for attention. Both cards use a similar arrangement of layered panels, a prominent focal image, and a circular sentiment. That repetition creates a familiar design structure, but changing the orientation, colors, and patterns keeps the cards from feeling like duplicates. This is one of my favorite ways to create a coordinated card set without spending time reinventing the entire design each time.

Christmas Card Design Ideas: Let Your Patterned Paper Lead

One of the biggest design decisions I made was allowing the patterned paper to influence the color choices for each card. The snowman card uses the Rustic Christmas Paper Pack from Unity Stamp Company, with its traditional red and green patterns creating a bright, festive foundation. The reindeer card takes a different direction with the vintage-inspired designs in The Christmas We Remember Vintage 6x6 Paper Pack. Its warmer tones work beautifully with the brown coloring of the reindeer and give the card a more rustic feel. When I choose patterned paper for a card, I usually look for two or three colors that I can repeat in the stamped image. This simple design principle helps everything feel connected, even when I'm combining multiple patterns. If you're working with paper from your own stash, try selecting a favorite pattern first and pulling your coloring palette from it. It's an easy way to create a cohesive handmade Christmas card without having to guess which colors will work together.

Coloring Techniques That Add Personality

The stamped images really bring these cards to life! I used alcohol markers to color the snowman and reindeer, keeping the colors coordinated with their respective paper collections. The snowman card also includes colored pencil shading, which is a technique I enjoy when I want to add a little extra depth without making the coloring process overly complicated. Colored pencils are wonderful for building soft shadows and adding dimension to areas that might otherwise look flat. For the snowman, the subtle blue shading helps define the snowy shape while maintaining that soft winter appearance. If you're still learning to combine coloring mediums, don't feel like you need to shade every part of an image. Start with a few areas where shadows naturally occur, such as beneath accessories or around the edges of a shape. You can also use colored pencils on their own if that's what you have available. The goal isn't perfection; it's finding a coloring approach that feels comfortable and helps your stamped images stand out.

Making This Design Work With Your Own Supplies

The beauty of this 2 Christmas cards, 1 layout approach is that you don't need the exact same products to make it work! Look through your stamp collection for two images that have a similar visual weight, such as a snowman and a Christmas tree, or a reindeer and a holiday character. Then choose patterned papers that complement each image and use cardstock layers to create separation between the different patterns. If you prefer a simpler design, reduce the number of patterned paper layers and let your stamped image take center stage. For a more detailed card, try adding another small patterned panel or experimenting with the placement of your sentiment. You can even use the same stamped image twice and change the colors or background papers to create a coordinating set. I love projects like this because they encourage us to look at our existing supplies differently and make the most of the products we already enjoy.

Creating Christmas cards doesn't have to mean starting with a completely new design every time. Sometimes, the most creative thing we can do is take a layout we love and explore the possibilities it offers. These two Unity Stamp Company cards reminded me how much personality can come from simply changing the stamped images, coloring choices, and patterned papers. I hope this project inspires you to pull out some favorite stamps and papers, experiment with a familiar layout, and discover how many different handmade Christmas cards you can create from one design idea. Have fun crafting, and remember that your creativity is what makes every handmade card special!
