Autumn Watercolor Thank You Card!

Hello, crafty friends! Today, I’m diving into one of my favorite seasonal projects—an autumn-themed watercolor thank you card. There’s just something about the warmth of fall colors, the coziness of layered textures, and that satisfying mix of watercolor and ink blending that brings a card to life! I’ll walk you through how I made this card with the rich shades of fall in mind, share the products I used, and toss in a few tips along the way to help you bring your own autumn card ideas to life.

Autumn Watercolor Thank You Card:

Bringing Autumn to Life with Stamps and Watercolors

For this card, I wanted the centerpiece to be a beautiful floral image that captures the essence of fall. I reached for the Autumn Sunshine Stamp Set, a real favorite in my collection, with its bold blooms and leafy details. I stamped the floral design onto Bristol Smooth Cardstock using Memento Rich Cocoa Ink—a warm, earthy choice that complements the fall theme perfectly.

Using my Tombow Dual Brush Pens, I brought the floral image to life by watercoloring directly onto the stamped image. I love how Tombows blend so easily, especially on Bristol Smooth, making it possible to get that dreamy, painterly look without too much fuss. If you’re newer to watercoloring with markers, here’s a tip: always start by applying color in the areas you want to be darkest and then pull the pigment out with a “thirsty” (or slightly damp) brush. It’s a fun way to play with shading, and it gives the image so much depth!

Pro Tip: For that sunflower in the floral image, I went with different shades of yellows and browns—layering colors until I achieved a rich, warm look. Using multiple shades like this can make a big difference in adding dimension and interest to a focal image. And for a bit of contrast, I opted for a red-orange on the larger leaves and a blue-green on the smaller ones, which really helps the design pop.

Adding Texture with Embossed Backgrounds

Once my watercoloring was done, I wanted to add a layer of texture behind the focal image. I cut a piece of Rouge Cardstock (from Altenew) to a slightly smaller size than the card base and embossed it with the Tiny Florals Embossing Folder (from the Rainbow Splash line from Simon Says Stamp). This embossing folder has a beautiful, delicate floral design that adds just the right amount of texture without overpowering the watercolor piece. Adding this layer behind the floral image is like framing a painting—it gives the card a finished, cohesive look.

Pro Tip: Embossed backgrounds can sometimes feel a bit “too perfect.” To give it a more rustic, fall vibe, I used Vintage Photo and Scorched Timber Distress Inks, along with a foam blending tool, to add some soft ink blending over the raised areas of the embossed cardstock and around the edges of the watercolor panel. This little touch makes a big difference and brings out those lovely embossed details in a way that feels warm and inviting.

Stamping the Sentiment

Now, what’s a thank-you card without a heartfelt sentiment? I reached for the Banner Sentiment Stamp Set (from Penny Black), which has the perfect little “Thank You” sentiment that fits snugly into the corner of my watercolor panel. I used my MISTI to stamp it in Versafine Nocturne Ink, ensuring a crisp, dark impression that stands out against the warm tones of the floral design. There’s something so satisfying about a well-placed sentiment, don’t you think? It’s the kind of finishing touch that just ties the whole design together.

Pro Tip: When stamping on watercolor paper, I always find it helpful to use a stamping tool like the MISTI. Watercolor paper can be a bit more textured, so having that backup allows you to stamp multiple times to get a clean, solid impression.

Putting It All Together

Once I had my focal panel and background ready, it was time to assemble everything. I layered the watercolor panel over the embossed Rouge Cardstock and then attached this layered piece to a sturdy A2 card base made from Neenah Solar White Ultra Thick Cardstock. This base is perfect for supporting all those beautiful layers and giving the card a polished, professional feel.

As a final touch, I added a few white gel pen highlights to the floral design—just a little extra detail that catches the light and brings out the dimension in the watercoloring. Sometimes it’s those subtle details that really make a handmade card feel extra special.
