There’s something about spring that always pulls me back to clean and simple cardmaking. Maybe it’s the fresh colors or the feeling of starting new again. Hi friends, it’s Rick, and today I’m sharing a card that came together with that exact mindset—light, cheerful, and easy to recreate. This little flower cart design is one of those ideas that works beautifully for a Mother’s Day card or a simple spring hello, and I love how just a few thoughtful choices can make it feel special without adding complexity.

Keeping It Clean Without Feeling Flat

When I sit down to create a clean and simple card, my main goal is balance. I want enough detail to keep things interesting, but not so much that it feels busy. For this design, the flower cart naturally becomes the focal point, so everything else needed to support it—not compete with it.

That’s where the oval frame came in. Using the Nested Stitched Flat Ovals Dies gave me a soft, contained space for the design. Instead of filling the whole card front, I created a “home” for the cart. This helps guide the eye and keeps everything feeling intentional.

I also chose to use a subtle ink-blended background on that inner oval. This is one of my favorite tricks for clean and simple cards. It adds warmth and dimension without introducing extra layers or patterns. A soft blend with neutral tones keeps the focus right where it belongs.

Why Cardstock Choices Matter

Let’s talk cardstock for a second, because this is where a lot of the magic happens. I used a mix of colors from CutCardStock—DCS Green Curry Cardstock, DCS Fruit Punch Cardstock, DSC Sand Castle Tan Cardstock, DCS Seafoam Green Cardstock, and Poptone Orange Fizz Cardstock—along with Cougar White Smooth 80 lbs Cardstock and Cougar White Smooth 110 lbs Cardstock for the base.

Here’s the key: I kept the palette cohesive but varied the intensity. The brighter tones (like Fruit Punch and Orange Fizz) draw your eye in, while the softer tones (like Sand Castle Tan and Seafoam Green) help balance everything out. That contrast is what gives the card life without making it feel overwhelming.

And if you’re wondering—yes, you can absolutely recreate this with whatever you have in your stash. Just aim for a mix of one or two bold colors and a couple of softer, grounding tones.

Building Dimension the Simple Way

One of the easiest ways to elevate a clean and simple card is with dimension—and you don’t need much. I popped up both the oval frame and the flower cart using foam adhesive. That small lift creates separation between the layers and adds a polished look.

The butterflies were a last-minute addition, and honestly, they’re one of my favorite parts. They help move your eye around the card and fill in that open space without cluttering it. Adding a small pearl to each one gives just a touch of elegance, which makes this design feel especially fitting for Mother’s Day.

Tips You Can Use Again and Again

If there’s one takeaway from this card, it’s this: clean and simple doesn’t mean plain. It’s all about making intentional choices.

  • Use frames or shapes to anchor your design

  • Add soft ink blending for depth without bulk

  • Limit your color palette, but vary the tones

  • Use dimension strategically, not everywhere

These are the kinds of techniques you can apply to almost any card design, no matter what stamps or dies you’re using.

Make It Your Own

This layout is incredibly flexible, which is something I always look for when I’m designing. You could swap the flower cart for any focal image—a teacup, a mailbox, even a simple sentiment—and the design would still work.

You can also change the mood just by adjusting the colors. Pastels will give you a soft spring feel, while brighter colors can take this into summer. Even a monochromatic version would look beautiful and elegant.

That’s what I love most about this kind of card—it gives you a starting point, not a limitation.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever felt like your cards needed “just one more thing,” I hope this project encourages you to pause and trust a simpler approach. Sometimes less really does say more.

I’d love to hear how you would personalize this design. Would you keep it soft and springy, or go bold with color? Either way, I hope this inspires you to pull out your cardstock and create something that feels like you.
