It’s that time of year when cozy plaid, warm colors, and a little bit of layering can turn a simple card into something extra special. Today I’m sharing a project featuring the brand-new Thankful Florals Stamp Set, which is the exclusive STAMPtember 2025 collaboration between Paper Rose Studio and Simon Says Stamp. This set is only available while supplies last, and if you’ve shopped STAMPtember before, you already know how quickly the exclusive stamps sell out. I wanted to pair these florals with the Autumn Florals 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pack from Paper Rose Studio to really lean into those rich fall vibes.

Building Around the Patterned Paper

Whenever I start a card, I usually ask myself one simple question: What’s going to be the star of the show? For this project, it was the plaid pattern from the Autumn Florals paper pack. I knew I wanted everything else to play off those warm, rustic tones. One of my favorite tricks is to pull out my markers and match them directly to the paper I’ve chosen. It saves so much time second-guessing colors later and keeps the whole design looking polished.

For this card, I used my OLO markers and picked out shades of orange and golden yellow for the blooms, with earthy greens for the leaves. Matching marker colors to the plaid instantly tied the floral image to the background.

Pro Tip: When you’re working with bold patterned paper, let it do some of the heavy lifting. Use it as your palette guide so your coloring and embellishments naturally coordinate.

Creating a Warm Autumn Glow

The next thing I wanted was a background that felt warm and seasonal but wouldn’t compete with the plaid. Ink blending is perfect for that. On a panel of Bristol Smooth Cardstock, I blended Old Paper and Vintage Photo Distress Inks for that soft, golden-brown glow that reminds me of autumn leaves just before they fall. To add depth without adding bulk, I stamped one of the floral images again over the ink blending with Vintage Photo ink. It’s subtle, but it creates a layered effect that looks more complicated than it really is.

Layering for Dimension

When it came time to assemble the card, I thought about balance. On the card base, I placed a wide strip of the plaid paper on the left side and then flipped the design over and used the back of the paper on the right. This is one of those little details that gives your card extra polish without needing extra supplies. Then I added my inked panel, matted with a piece of brown cardstock for contrast.

To finish it off, I popped the colored and fussy-cut florals onto the top corner, added some crisp white gel pen highlights, and a few Crystal Clear embellishments for a touch of sparkle. The sentiment, stamped in Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink, keeps everything clean and grounded.

The Finished Look

What I love most about this design is how everything ties together—the plaid, the florals, and the soft ink blending. It’s a wonderful example of how to use patterned paper as a roadmap for your cardmaking. By pulling colors from the plaid and repeating them in the stamped images, the whole design feels intentional and cohesive.

If you’ve ever felt like your cards were “too busy” when you tried combining patterned paper with stamping, try this approach. Let one element (in this case, the plaid paper) set the tone, and then make every other choice—ink colors, markers, embellishments—work with it instead of against it.

Final Thoughts

The Thankful Florals Stamp Set is one of those timeless sets you’ll reach for again and again, but remember—it’s part of STAMPtember 2025 and only available while supplies last. Pairing it with Paper Rose Studio’s Autumn Florals paper pack made this card come together so effortlessly, and I love how the finished piece feels warm, layered, and distinctly autumn.

If you’re looking for a way to make your fall cards feel more polished, try coordinating your coloring with your patterned paper and add a few simple layered touches. You’ll be amazed at how professional and put-together your cards will look.
