There are times when a handmade card can say exactly what someone needs to hear. Whether a friend is recovering from an illness, navigating a difficult season, or simply having a tough week, an encouragement card can be a meaningful way to let them know they're not alone.
For today's card, I reached for the Paging Dr. Chaos collection from Scrappy Boy Stamps to create a lighthearted encouragement card that feels uplifting without being overly serious. One of the things I enjoy most about themed stamp sets like this is that they can be used for much more than their obvious purpose. While medical-themed images are a natural fit for get well cards, they also work beautifully for encouragement cards because they communicate care, support, and kindness.

Using Pattern Paper to Tell a Story
When I started designing this card, I knew I wanted the patterned papers to play an important role. The Paging Dr. Chaos 6x9 Pattern Paper Pack includes designs that immediately reinforce the healthcare theme, but I didn't want the background to compete with the stamped images.
Instead of covering the entire card with one busy pattern, I mixed several coordinating designs and layered them together. This approach creates visual interest while allowing each paper to contribute something different to the overall design.
One thing I've learned over the years is that successful pattern paper mixing often comes down to balance. When combining multiple patterns, I like to vary the scale and density of the prints. Pairing a busier design with softer, more open patterns helps keep the eye moving across the card without feeling overwhelmed.
This is a technique that works with virtually any paper collection. If you have patterned papers in your stash that coordinate by color but seem difficult to use together, try layering smaller sections rather than committing to a full background. You'll often discover combinations you wouldn't have considered otherwise.

Letting the Images Take Center Stage
The stamped characters from the Paging Dr. Chaos Stamp Set quickly became the focal point of this design. Their playful style brings personality and warmth to the card, making the encouragement theme feel approachable and cheerful.
I colored the images with alcohol markers because they provide smooth blending and vibrant color. For character images especially, alcohol markers make it easy to add dimension through simple shading while keeping the overall look clean and polished.
What I appreciate about character-based cards is that they naturally create an emotional connection. The images help tell the story before the recipient even reads the sentiment. In this case, the healthcare-themed characters reinforce the message of support and encouragement in a visual way.
If coloring isn't your favorite part of cardmaking, don't let that stop you from using similar designs. These images would look wonderful with colored pencils, watercolor markers, or even simple single-color coloring techniques. Sometimes limiting your coloring actually helps the focal image stand out more.

Why Layered Layouts Work So Well
The layered panel design became one of my favorite parts of this project. Layering is an easy way to add depth and structure without relying on bulky embellishments.
By stacking patterned paper panels behind the stamped images, I was able to create distinct sections on the card while guiding the viewer's eye toward the focal point. The layers also help separate the busy patterns from the detailed coloring, allowing both elements to shine.
This type of layout is incredibly versatile. You can adapt it to almost any stamp set, occasion, or paper collection. It's also a great solution when you have several patterned papers you love and can't decide which one to use.

Making the Design Your Own
One of the reasons I enjoy sharing projects like this is because the ideas can easily be adapted using supplies you already own.
Instead of medical-themed images, you could use florals, animals, or everyday character stamps. The layered panel arrangement would work just as well for birthday cards, friendship cards, thank you cards, or thinking-of-you cards.
You can also change the overall feel of the design simply by adjusting the color palette. Soft pastels create a gentle and comforting look, while brighter colors add energy and optimism.
The goal isn't to recreate a card exactly. It's to take inspiration from the design principles—layering, pattern mixing, and focal-point placement—and apply them in a way that fits your own style.

Final Thoughts
Sometimes the most meaningful cards are the ones created with the simple intention of encouraging someone else. A thoughtful sentiment, a few coordinating papers, and a stamped image can come together to create something that brightens a person's day.
I hope this card inspires you to look at your patterned paper collections in new ways and experiment with layering designs you might not normally combine. You may be surprised by how much depth and interest you can create with supplies already sitting in your craft room.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope you leave feeling inspired to create a card that brings a little extra encouragement and kindness to someone who needs it.
