Every now and then, I come across a card design that feels effortless but still looks polished—and this birthday card idea is exactly that. I was in the mood for something pretty and floral (surprise, surprise) but didn’t want to spend hours puzzling over layers and layout. So I pulled out the June 2025 Pixi Dust Designs Card Sketch and let that do the heavy lifting for me. If you’ve ever stared at your supplies and thought, “Where do I even start?”—this sketch is your solution. It’s simple, easy to follow, and works beautifully with all kinds of patterned papers and die sets.

For this project, I reached for some of my favorites from Pixi Dust Designs: the Calla Lillies Die Set, the Foliage Die Set, and the It’s Your Birthday Stamp Set. I also grabbed the Bella Flowers 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pad, which has the softest florals and color combos that instantly make any card feel thoughtful and well-coordinated.

Working from the Sketch

When I say this sketch saved me time, I mean it. I printed it out (you’ll find the PDF at the bottom of this post), laid it on my desk, and started pulling products. The best part of using a sketch like this is that it gives you a solid starting point without boxing you in creatively. I knew I wanted to feature some dimensional die cuts, so I kept the background and layers simple—just a couple pieces of patterned paper matted with coordinating cardstock to bring everything together.

A fun little detail: I picked out two prints from the Bella Flowers paper pad that reminded me of a spring garden in full bloom. They had this mix of soft pinks, light greens, and creamy yellows that felt perfect for the calla lilies. Then I pulled out my Kaleidoscope 110 lb Smooth Cardstock from Harmony Paper Co. to match those colors for my die cutting.

Die Cutting & Color Details

If you’ve worked with the Calla Lillies Die Set before, you already know how beautiful it is. The petals have just enough curve and detail to feel elegant without being fussy. I cut the blooms from a soft pink cardstock and added just a bit of ink blending to the edges with Distress Inks—nothing too dramatic, just enough to give the petals a bit of life. The centers were a little pop of yellow, and the leaves came from a mix of soft and medium greens. For extra texture, I used the Foliage Die Set to layer in a few leafy accents behind the lilies.

Pro tip: If you're ink blending small die cuts, try using a small blending brush with a light touch. It really helps you control where the color goes, especially around those delicate curves.

The Layout That Brings It All Together

I followed the sketch dimensions pretty closely for this one. I trimmed one of the floral pattern papers down to 3 7/8" x 5 1/8", and the smaller square panel to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". I mounted both onto green cardstock that matched my die-cut foliage—cut just slightly larger for a clean framed look—and layered everything onto a top-folding A2 card base made from Brilliant White 110 lb Smooth Cardstock.

A simple strip of pattern paper (3/4" x 4 1/4") on the inside bottom edge of the card base added a sweet finishing touch. I always love that little peek of pattern when someone opens a handmade card—it’s a detail that makes the card feel extra special without any extra effort.

Assembling the Focal Point

Once everything was layered and adhered, I played around with the placement of the calla lilies and foliage. I wanted the bouquet to feel full and organic, so I arranged the greenery first, then tucked the lilies into place. To keep it grounded, I tied a bit of May Arts Burlap Twine around the cluster and finished it with a bow. It added just the right amount of rustic texture.

For the sentiment, I stamped “Best Wishes” from the It’s Your Birthday Stamp Set using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink right onto the smaller patterned panel. That little space was perfect for a short sentiment—balanced but still easy to read.

And of course, I had to add a few finishing touches. I used some iridescent pearls from my stash (they're no longer available, but I’ve linked a similar option in the supply list below). They catch the light beautifully and tie the whole card together with a soft shimmer.

Final Thoughts

This card came together so easily, and I honestly think that’s thanks to starting with the card sketch. If you’re ever in a creative rut, or just need to make something beautiful without reinventing the wheel, sketches are such a helpful tool. They take the pressure off, so you can focus on choosing colors and textures that make your heart happy.

I hope today’s card inspires you to dig into your stash, pull out a few favorite dies, and let a simple layout guide you. Whether you’re crafting for a birthday, thank-you card, or even a just-because note, this sketch can be a great jumping-off point.
