Halloween is one of my favorite times to play with cardmaking supplies because it lets me mix playful and spooky in ways that feel so unique. For this card, I had a lot of fun blending some older favorites with newer releases from Scrappy Boy Stamps. It’s always rewarding to see how different collections work together—it keeps my stash fresh and gives me an excuse to revisit products I already love. The star of today’s card is the new Spooky Web Mouse Ears Die Set paired with the Ghost Mouse Die Set, but I also pulled in the Mouse Ears Mini Album Die Set, the Trickster Ghost 6x6 Pattern Paper Pack, and even a sentiment from the South in Your Mouth Phrases Word Dies. To top it all off, I couldn’t resist adding a little magic with glow in the dark embossing powder—because who doesn’t love a card that lights up when the lights go out?

A Simple Night Sky Background

When it comes to Halloween cards, a good background sets the tone. I kept this one simple but effective by ink blending Pinkfresh Studio’s Lush Forest, Atlantis, and Opulence inks, then darkening the edges with a little Black Soot Distress Ink. To create the look of distant stars, I flicked on water, which never fails to add instant depth.

Pro Tip: If you ever feel like your ink blending isn’t “perfect,” just keep going. Adding water flicks or layering darker inks around the edges covers a multitude of blending marks and gives a more organic, textured look anyway.

The Glow-in-the-Dark Web Ears

Now, let’s talk about those mouse ears! I die cut the stitched shape from the Mouse Ears Mini Album Die Set using a sheet of patterned paper from the Trickster Ghost 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pack. Layered on top is the new Spooky Web Mouse Ears Die, which I heat embossed with Glow-In-The-Dark powder. To get that smooth, even glow, I pressed Versamark Ink over the web, poured on embossing powder, and heat set it—not once, but twice. Doubling up the embossing layer gives it a solid, glassy finish that holds the glow beautifully.

I still remember the first time I tried glow in the dark embossing powder years ago—I turned off the lights in my craft room like a kid seeing fireworks for the first time. That same little thrill still hits every time I use it, and it’s one of those unexpected touches that makes handmade cards feel extra special.

Building the Ghost Mouse Duo

Of course, the stars of the show are the two little ghosts. Using the Ghost Mouse Die Set, I cut the bottom layers from Midnight Black Cardstock and topped them with stitched layers in Neenah Ultra Thick White. To give the smaller ghost her own personality, I added a bow pieced together from white cardstock and a scrap of the Trickster Ghost patterned paper.

I love creating little “stories” with die-cut characters, and in this case, I imagined the two ghosts as a father and daughter heading out for a night of trick-or-treating. Small details like the layered bow or the smiles on their faces make the scene feel alive. Adding them to the card front with two different thicknesses of foam tape created just enough dimension to make them pop without overwhelming the design.

Pro Tip: When building character dies, cutting the base layer in black and the top in white is a quick way to create instant depth without a lot of extra coloring. It’s simple but really effective.

The Final Touches

To pull everything together, I added a sentiment using the South in Your Mouth Phrases Word Dies. I also tucked in a few glow in the dark stars from the Glowing Sky Embellishment Mix by Trinity Stamps and highlighted the ghosts with a white gel pen. The glow effect paired with the dimensional ghosts gives this card that “wow” factor without being overly complicated.

Why Mixing Products Matters

One of the best parts of this project was combining new releases with older products in my stash. Sometimes we get so focused on the latest thing that older dies or paper packs sit untouched. But when you mix them, you open up new possibilities. The mouse ears from an older album set suddenly feel fresh when paired with a glow-in-the-dark web from a brand-new release. That balance keeps your creativity flowing and helps you stretch the value of your supplies.

If you’ve been wanting to make a Halloween card that’s both playful and a little unexpected, this project is a perfect place to start. Between the simple night sky, glowing spider web ears, and those sweet little ghost characters, it’s a design that’s sure to make someone smile—even in the dark.
