Halloween Cardmaking Tutorial: Why This Simple Layout Works

When I am designing a card around a large character image, I usually let that image do most of the work. Mildred is full of personality and detail, so I did not want to surround her with lots of additional embellishments that might compete for attention. Instead, I used a simple mat and a soft stenciled area behind the image to create separation from the white cardstock. That little bit of background color makes the focal image stand out while still leaving plenty of open space. It is an approach I recommend when you have a favorite detailed stamp in your stash: give it room to shine.

Using Color to Create Personality

The alcohol marker coloring is where this card really comes alive. You do not need the exact supplies I used to recreate the idea behind this card. Look through your own stamp collection for a large character, funny Halloween image, or detailed focal stamp. Then pair it with a simple masked shape and a few coordinating colors. If you do not use alcohol markers, colored pencils, watercolor, or another coloring medium can give you a completely different look while keeping the same design principles. You can also change the background color to match your image or create a more traditional Halloween palette with orange, purple, and black.
