Halloween Scene Card! Video Tutorial | Spooky & Sweet Halloween Day 13

Hello, crafty friends! Welcome back to the Spooky & Sweet Halloween Series – I can’t believe we’re already on Day 13! Today, I’m excited to share a whimsical Halloween scene card featuring the Frightfully Fun Stamp Set and coordinating Frightfully Fun Die Set from Avery Elle. If you love creating playful, detailed cards with a bit of dimension, you’re going to have so much fun with this project. And of course, I’ve got a video tutorial below that walks you through every step!

But before we get into the details, let’s talk inspiration. I’m a firm believer that sometimes the perfect card starts with one simple spark—often for me, that’s pattern paper. For this card, I pulled out the Fall Fun 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pad from Carta Bella, and that one little piece of fall-inspired paper with colorful leaves and acorns set the entire color palette in motion. Let’s dive into how everything came together!

Color Inspiration: It All Starts with Pattern Paper

One thing I always love to share is how something as small as a scrap of pattern paper can shape an entire card design. I find that working with pre-selected colors, like those in a paper pad, can really help take the guesswork out of choosing coordinating shades for images and backgrounds. In this case, the Fall Fun pattern paper with its warm autumn tones—reds, oranges, yellows, browns, and a touch of olive green—set the stage for the whole card.

Pro Tip: When you’re feeling stuck on color choices, pattern paper is a great place to start! It pulls everything together and helps keep the overall card cohesive.

Bringing the Halloween Characters to Life

Once I had my color palette, it was time to dive into the adorable Frightfully Fun Stamp Set. This stamp set is perfect for Halloween cards, especially if you enjoy a little whimsy and cuteness. I stamped the images using Intense Black Ink on Neenah Solar White Ultra Thick Cardstock (my go-to for a sturdy, clean impression). I wanted these little characters to really shine, so I spent some time coloring them with my Copic markers.

And let me tell you, these characters were a blast to color! The little pig in his devil costume? Absolutely adorable. The turtle as a mummy, the raccoon as a witch, the monkey as Frankenstein, and the mouse in his jack-o-lantern—each one just makes you smile. I matched their colors to the leaves and acorns in the pattern paper to tie the whole scene together. Of course, I couldn’t forget the extra pumpkins, stars, and moon from the stamp set to fill in the scene.

Pro Tip: When coloring, try to match your images to the color scheme in your background or pattern paper. It creates a seamless look and makes the overall card feel more intentional and balanced.

Creating the Spooky Autumn Sky

Now, no Halloween scene is complete without a spooky sky! For the focal panel, I wanted something that felt like an autumn sunset—the kind where the sky’s colors reflect on the clouds. To achieve that, I grabbed my Cloudy Stencil and Distress Oxide Inks in Fired Brick, Spiced Marmalade, and Mustard Seed. Starting at the bottom, I blended the colors upward to create a soft, glowing gradient.

One thing I love about this blend is that it feels warm and cozy, perfect for a fall scene but still with that hint of Halloween magic. Using Blending Brushes, I was able to get that smooth transition between colors that really adds to the depth of the sky.

For the grass, I used the Grassy Stencil with Peeled Paint and Rustic Wilderness Distress Oxide Inks. The greens balanced out the warm tones and grounded the scene, giving the trick-or-treaters a place to stand.

Pro Tip: When ink blending, don’t be afraid to layer your colors! Oxide inks are great for this because they blend smoothly and layer beautifully. Start with lighter colors and build up to darker shades for more depth.

Assembling the Card: Adding Dimension & Finishing Touches

Once the focal panel was ready, I knew it needed to have a bit of texture and dimension. I used the second largest die from the Pinking Birthday Rectangles Etched Dies from Spellbinders to give the focal panel a fun, decorative edge. Then, I attached the piece of Fall Fun pattern paper (the one that inspired the whole color palette) to an A2 card base, cutting it down to fit perfectly.

I always like adding layers and extra pieces for interest, so I used the leftover piece (the reverse side) of the same pattern paper (about 2" x 4 1/4") and placed it along the card front. It’s a great way to bring cohesion to the design without overwhelming it.

For the sentiment, I stamped “Witch way to the candy” on the card front using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink—a rich, crisp black that really stands out. Inside, I stamped the Happy Halloween sentiment along with the little pig in Fired Brick Distress Oxide Ink for a playful touch when the card is opened.

The Trick-or-Treaters Take the Spotlight

With the background set, it was time to place the characters. I used a mix of foam tape and liquid glue to adhere the pig, turtle, raccoon, monkey, and mouse along the bottom edge of the card. This helped give some dimension, especially where they hang off the focal panel. I love how the foam tape makes the characters pop, giving them a little more personality as they seem to “jump” off the card.

Finally, I attached the moon and stars in the sky with a bit of liquid glue to complete the scene. And for a finishing touch, I added some Star Dust Stickles to the images for that extra sparkle. After all, who doesn’t love a little glitter on a Halloween card?

Pro Tip: Mixing foam tape with liquid glue is a great way to create varying levels of dimension on your cards. Foam tape adds height, while glue ensures a strong, flat hold where needed.
