There are certain card themes that never seem to go out of style, and friendship cards are definitely one of them. Whether you're sending a note of encouragement, letting someone know you're thinking about them, or simply brightening their day, a handmade card adds a personal touch that means so much.

For today's card, I was inspired by an underwater theme and wanted to create a design that felt cheerful, whimsical, and full of movement. Using products from The Rabbit Hole Designs along with some of my favorite coloring supplies, I combined stamping, alcohol marker coloring, ink blending, and patterned paper to create a card that feels layered and detailed without becoming overwhelming.

Building a Strong Focal Point

When I'm designing a card, I like to start by deciding what I want the recipient to notice first. In this case, the adorable mermaid from the Fin-tastic Stamp Set naturally became the star of the design.

One of the reasons character images work so well on friendship cards is that they immediately create a sense of personality and connection. To help the mermaid stand out, I colored her with Ohuhu Alcohol Markers using bright, happy colors and then placed her against a softly blended underwater background.

Ink blending is one of my favorite techniques for creating atmosphere. Instead of adding lots of extra embellishments, a simple blended background can establish a setting and add visual interest while still allowing the stamped image to remain the focal point. The soft blue tones create the feeling of water without competing with the detailed coloring.

Mixing Pattern Paper with Custom Backgrounds

One design choice I particularly enjoyed on this card was combining the Watercolor Bubbles 6x6 Pattern Paper Pack with my own stamped background elements.

Many cardmakers struggle with deciding when to use patterned paper and when to create custom backgrounds. The truth is that the two can work beautifully together. The bubble pattern paper reinforces the underwater theme while adding subtle texture and interest around the edges of the design.

To make everything feel cohesive, I also incorporated stamping onto cardstock to create additional custom pattern details. This is a technique I often recommend because it helps stretch your stamp collection and gives you more flexibility when matching colors and themes.

If you've ever felt that your patterned paper doesn't quite coordinate with your project, creating your own stamped patterns can help bridge that gap and tie all the elements together.

Creating Depth Without Bulk

One of the things that makes underwater scenes so appealing is the natural sense of depth they can have. Fish, coral, seaweed, and other ocean elements naturally layer well together.

For this card, I used the Fin-tastic Outline Dies to separate individual images and create dimension through layering. Even simple die-cut elements can make a scene feel more dynamic when placed at varying heights and positions.

The coral cluster at the bottom of the card helps anchor the design while giving the mermaid a setting to interact with. Meanwhile, the small fish scattered throughout the scene help guide the eye around the card and reinforce the underwater story.

This is a useful design principle for many types of scene cards. Rather than filling every open space, strategically repeating smaller images can create movement and visual balance.

Lessons from This Design

One of the biggest takeaways from this project is how effective color can be in establishing a theme.

Even without the mermaid image, the combination of aqua blues, sea-inspired greens, and vibrant purples immediately suggests an underwater environment. When choosing colors for themed cards, consider the mood and setting you want to communicate before selecting your palette.

Another lesson is that scene-building doesn't have to be complicated. Many cardmakers assume elaborate scenes require dozens of images and intricate masking techniques. In reality, a few thoughtfully placed elements, a blended background, and a cohesive color palette can achieve the same storytelling effect.

Ideas for Making This Design Your Own

One of the best things about cardmaking is adapting ideas to fit your own supplies and style.

If you don't have the Fin-tastic Stamp Set, look through your collection for other character images that could work in a themed environment. Fairies, garden critters, beach-themed images, and even floral focal points can all benefit from the same design approach.

You can also customize the overall look by:

  • Changing the color palette to fit a specific recipient.

  • Using colored cardstock instead of patterned paper.

  • Creating your own bubble background with stamps and ink.

  • Swapping alcohol markers for colored pencils or watercolor.

  • Simplifying the layout for a clean and simple card design.

The underlying design principles remain the same regardless of the products you choose.

Final Thoughts

One of the reasons I enjoy creating friendship cards is that they give us an opportunity to connect with others in a meaningful way. A handmade card doesn't need to be complicated to make an impact. Often it's the thoughtful combination of color, imagery, and personal creativity that makes a project memorable.

I hope this card inspires you to experiment with scene building, custom backgrounds, and creative ways to combine patterned paper with stamping. Most importantly, I hope it encourages you to use the supplies you already have and create something uniquely your own.
