October is one of my favorite months to make cards, because I get to combine two things I love—spooky Halloween details and bright, cheerful birthday designs. This year, I had a friend with an October birthday, and I knew I wanted to create something that felt playful and festive without being too scary. The result? A Halloween-themed birthday card featuring the Monster Bubu Die Set, paired with the Halloween 6 x 6 Paper Pad and the Birthday Sentiment Die Set from Pixi Dust Designs. It’s the perfect mix of spooky and sweet, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

How to Make a Halloween Birthday Card with Monster Bubu
Why a Halloween Birthday Card Works So Well
There’s something magical about birthdays that fall in October—they practically beg for a little Halloween flair. I remember years ago making a quick pumpkin-themed card for a coworker’s October birthday, and she lit up when she saw it. Since then, I’ve loved giving a seasonal spin to birthday cards during this time of year. It’s such an easy way to make your design feel personalized and intentional.
That’s where the Monster Bubu Die Set comes in. The little monster character is just the right amount of quirky, and when paired with the bold patterns from the Halloween 6 x 6 Paper Pad, it instantly sets the tone for a fun, festive card. Adding in the Birthday Sentiment Die Set brings it all together so the design feels celebratory and not just seasonal.

Playing with Color and Pattern
One of the things I loved most about working on this card was mixing and matching patterns from the Halloween Paper Pad. The scaled-down prints in a 6 x 6 pad make it so easy to use them on cards without overwhelming your design. I leaned into the orange-and-black palette but added a pop of purple to give it a little extra playfulness.
Pro Tip: If you’re working with bold patterned paper, try layering it with a solid cardstock mat (I used black) to help each section stand out. It creates just enough separation so your eye knows where to land without the design feeling too busy.

Bringing Monster Bubu to Life
Die cutting Monster Bubu is one of those processes that feels like building a little paper doll. I cut all the pieces in bright colors to match the patterned papers and then layered them together for a dimensional, cheerful look. You can have so much fun giving Bubu personality just by switching up the colors.
When I first started using character dies like this, I was worried they’d be fussy. But the Monster Bubu Die Set is surprisingly simple to assemble, and the results look polished every time. I find it’s the kind of die that makes you smile as you work with it—it’s hard not to imagine the recipient smiling too when they open it.

Finishing Touches that Make a Difference
No birthday card is complete without a big, bold sentiment. The Birthday Sentiment Die Set was the perfect finishing touch here. I cut it from a contrasting cardstock so it would stand out against the patterned paper, and then layered it for extra dimension.
Pro Tip: When working with sentiment dies, try stacking two or three layers of cardstock together. It not only gives you a sturdier embellishment, but it also creates a subtle shadow effect that looks so polished.
I also added a few white gel pen highlights for sparkle on the balloons without distracting from the main design. It’s those little finishing touches that make a handmade card feel extra special.

Wrapping It Up
Making this Halloween-themed birthday card reminded me why I love seasonal crafting so much—it pushes me to think outside the box and play with combinations I might not use otherwise. The Monster Bubu Die Set, the Halloween 6 x 6 Paper Pad, and the Birthday Sentiment Die Set all worked together seamlessly to create a card that’s both spooky and celebratory.
If you’ve got a friend or family member with an October birthday, I encourage you to give this idea a try. It’s such a fun way to celebrate their special day while embracing the Halloween spirit.
