Have you ever had a stamp set that just made you smile the minute you saw it? That was me the moment I pulled out the Slugs & Kisses Stamp Set from Miss Ink Stamps. I knew I had to make something whimsical and interactive—something that could bring a little joy to someone who might be feeling under the weather. This Pull Tab Fun Fold card was the perfect design to let that little wizard and his bucket of slugs shine, and it came together with a mix of dies, stencils, and playful ink blending.

This card design is one of those that looks complicated but is surprisingly doable with a few thoughtful layers and well-placed elements. Whether you're a seasoned card maker or just dipping your toes into fun folds, I hope this project inspires you to try something a little magical.

Let’s Talk Inspiration and Interactivity

I’ve always had a soft spot for interactive cards—they feel like little surprises waiting to unfold. This pull tab design adds just enough movement to make it feel special without being fussy to assemble. I started with the adorable little wizard holding a bucket of slugs (how cute is that?) and knew right away that I wanted him to be the star of the show.

He’s from the Slugs & Kisses Stamp Set, and I stamped him along with a bucket of slugs on Hammermill Smooth Cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink. It’s my go-to combo when I’m planning to use Copic markers. After coloring, I cut them out using the coordinating dies, which gave such a nice clean edge—no fussy cutting needed.

The Power of Die Cutting and Layer Play

When I design an interactive card like this, I think of it like layering a scene on stage. I used the EIEIO Frame Dies to cut out both the scalloped border and the smaller rectangle. That scalloped frame really helped ground the design and added a nice finished edge.

For the pull tab mechanism and layered squares, I used my paper trimmer to cut various sizes: 2½", 2¼", 2", and 1¾" squares. I also cut a 2" x 6¼" strip for the pull tab itself. One of my favorite ways to tie everything together is by ink blending my layers, and this was no exception—Twisted Citron Distress Oxide was the perfect vibrant green to bring in that magical, potion-like glow.

Pro Tip: When you’re ink blending small die cuts like these, use a scrap piece of masking tape on the back and stick them to a slick surface (like the back of a stamp package). It keeps them from sliding around and gives you much more control.

A Background Worth Bottling

The background was such a joy to build. Using the Potion Bottles Layering Stencil Set, I blended a mix of Distress Oxide Inks: Antique Linen, Frayed Burlap, Vintage Photo (for the bottles and toppers), Twisted Citron, Carved Pumpkin, and Villainous Potion (for the potions inside the bottles). It was fun experimenting with how the bottles overlapped—each layer adding more dimension.

I love how this stencil set allows for multi-colored details that feel like they were stamped but without the extra steps of masking or aligning stamps. It’s perfect for when you want a rich background but still want your focal image to pop.

Pull Tabs Add the Magic

With all the elements ready to go, it was time to bring the card to life. The pull tab fits right behind the layers, and when you gently pull it, it creates that magical movement that makes interactive cards so fun to give. I added a small ribbon from my stash to the tab for a pop of texture and an extra visual cue.

On one of the smaller squares, I stamped the sentiment “Sorry you’re feeling sluggish” from the same Slugs & Kisses Stamp Set using Versafine Onyx Black Ink. I love how the sentiment plays perfectly with the imagery—cheeky, but sweet.

Inside the card, I added another sentiment and stamped the wizard and bucket of slugs again using Twisted Citron Distress Oxide Ink. It’s a little unexpected detail that ties the inside and outside together beautifully.

Little Touches That Make a Big Impact

To finish everything off, I added a few white gel pen highlights to the character and bottles. It’s amazing what a few well-placed dots and lines can do—they bring the illustration to life and add dimension in the simplest way. A few green rhinestones gave just enough sparkle without overpowering the scene.

This card really checks all the boxes for me: bright color, movement, layered stenciling, and a big dose of fun. It’s a reminder that we don’t always have to take our cardmaking so seriously—sometimes, it’s about letting your imagination run a little wild and sending a bit of magic through the mail.
