Hello, crafty friends! Today, I’m so excited to share a card that just makes my heart sing: a magical rainbow dragon card, perfect for celebrating Pride. I’ve always loved working with bright, happy colors, and combining them with a playful critter like this sweet dragon from The Rabbit Hole Designs just brings a big smile to my face.

Make a Magical Rainbow Dragon Card for Pride:
Stamping and Masking the Dragon
For this card, I started out by stamping the little sitting dragon from the Dragon Fun Bundle using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink onto Brilliant White 110 lbs Smooth Cardstock. If you’ve been following my cardmaking adventures for a while, you know how much I love starting with a crisp, clean stamped image. It’s like opening a brand new coloring book – all that possibility waiting to be filled in!
To keep my little dragon safe while I created the rainbow magic around him, I used the reusable mask that comes in the Dragon Fun Bundle. I also used a stencil from the Background Basics Stencil set by Penny Black. This kept the rainbow blending neatly contained, letting the dragon remain the star of the show.

Creating the Rainbow Background
Creating that rainbow background is always the highlight of a project for me. I used a rainbow of ink colors and my favorite blending brushes to get a seamless blend. One of my best tips for ink blending is to work lightly and build up the color slowly – it’s amazing how vibrant the colors can get without harsh lines. And don’t be afraid to go back and forth between colors to get that smooth transition!
Adding Shimmer and Sparkle
Once I had the rainbow down, I wanted to add some shimmer and magic. With the masks still in place, I splattered on some gold watercolor and then spritzed the whole panel with Iridescent Shimmer Spray. I have to say, I never get tired of how those gold splatters catch the light. It’s like giving your card a little extra sparkle without any extra bulk.
When everything was dry, I removed the mask and stencil and tucked them back into their packaging. I always take a moment here to appreciate the reveal – pulling off the mask and seeing that perfectly crisp image against the rainbow background is one of the best parts of the process!

Coloring the Dragon
For coloring the dragon, I kept him mostly white to let the rainbow really stand out. I used my Copic markers, just three light shades of warm gray, to add some gentle shadows. To give him a bit of royal flair, I colored his horns and spikes in gold. I like how this small pop of metallic really ties in with the gold splatters on the background.
Embossing the Sentiment
Of course, a card wouldn’t be complete without a sentiment! I grabbed a scrap of Midnight Black 110 lbs Smooth Cardstock and prepped it with my Cottontail Powder Tool – this is a must for keeping embossing powder only where I want it. I stamped the “Happy Pride” sentiment from the Sentimentally Speaking Holidays Bundle using Versamark Ink and then heat embossed it with white embossing powder. After cutting it out with the coordinating die, I added a couple of extra die-cut layers behind it to give it dimension and help it pop.

Bringing It All Together
One of my favorite finishing touches is adding a layer of holographic foil cardstock – this time I used a piece from the Holographic Mirror Paper Pad. That shimmer and shine really echoes the rainbow background and adds a bit of drama! I matted my card front onto this foil and then attached it to a top-folding A2 card base, again using that lovely Brilliant White cardstock.
To finish it off, I sprinkled on a few Bubble Bath Dew Drops for that sweet sparkle and added a few white gel pen highlights here and there. These small touches are what really make a card feel complete – they add dimension and catch the light in all the right ways.

Why I Love This Card
This card was such a joy to make. There’s something about combining a playful critter, a rainbow of colors, and a shimmer of gold that feels just right for celebrating Pride. I love that it’s bright and bold but also has those sweet little details that make it feel extra special.
Pro Tip: Let Your Colors Shine
One of the best ways to make your rainbow backgrounds stand out is to keep your focal image simple. That’s why I chose to leave my dragon mostly white with just a touch of warm gray shading. It’s a simple trick, but it lets those rainbow colors really sing.
If you’d like to see how the whole card came together, I’ve put together a video tutorial where I walk you through every step, from inking that rainbow to adding the final touches. Watching it all unfold is like a little burst of creative inspiration – I hope you’ll check it out!
