Mother’s Day Card with The Rabbit Hole Designs Paisley Bandana Layering Stencils

There’s something about soft florals and delicate background patterns that always feels perfect for Mother’s Day cards. I wanted this card to have a clean and layered look while still feeling warm and detailed, so I focused on combining a subtle stenciled background with a brightly colored floral image. Sometimes a card only needs one strong focal point and a little supporting texture to feel complete, and this design was a good reminder of that.

For this project, I used the The Rabbit Hole Designs Paisley Bandana Layering Stencils to create the soft lavender background. Instead of going heavy with contrast, I blended Sheer Freesia ink lightly through the stencil layers to keep everything soft and cohesive. When I’m creating clean and layered cards, I try to think about the background as a supporting element rather than the star of the card. A tone-on-tone stencil design adds interest without competing with the focal image.
Why Soft Backgrounds Work So Well for Floral Cards
One of my favorite design tricks for floral cards is pairing bold coloring with a muted background. The bouquet image from the Year 4 Birthday Stamp Set has a lot of personality once colored, so keeping the background lighter helped the flowers stand out immediately.
I colored the floral image with Tombow Dual Brush Pens on Bristol Smooth Cardstock because the smoother surface allows the markers to blend beautifully while still holding crisp stamped lines from Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink. I especially love using bright purples and oranges together because they create contrast without feeling harsh. The combination feels cheerful and energetic, which works wonderfully for spring and Mother’s Day themes.

If you don’t have Tombow markers, this same idea would work beautifully with watercolor pencils, alcohol markers, or even colored pencils. The key is keeping the background softer than the focal image so your eye naturally knows where to look first.
Adding Dimension Without Making the Card Feel Busy
Even though this is a fairly clean card design, I still wanted a little extra depth. That’s where the partial die cutting became really useful. Allowing the bouquet to overlap the sentiment strip creates dimension and helps connect the different elements together visually.

This is one of those design techniques that makes a card look more polished without requiring complicated layers or bulky embellishments. It also helps break up strong horizontal lines, which can sometimes make a card layout feel stiff. By letting the floral image extend slightly beyond the sentiment area, the entire design feels softer and more organic.
I also kept the embellishments minimal by adding only a few gems around the sentiment strip. Small details like that can help guide the eye around the card without overwhelming the design.

A Great Layout to Adapt for Other Occasions
One thing I really love about this clean and layered card layout is how easy it is to adapt with supplies you already own. You could easily swap the bouquet image for:
A large sentiment
A butterfly or bird image
Seasonal florals
Holiday-themed stamps
You can also change the mood of the card simply by adjusting the ink colors in the background. Soft pinks and peaches would feel romantic, while blues and greens could create a calmer everyday card design.
If layered stencils feel intimidating, try using only one layer instead of the full stencil set. Even a partial background pattern can add enough texture to make a clean card feel more finished.

Final Thoughts
This card was a good reminder that clean and simple doesn’t have to mean plain. Thoughtful layering, soft ink blending, and a strong focal image can create a design that feels detailed while still being approachable for everyday crafting.
I also love how versatile this overall concept is. Whether you’re creating a handmade Mother’s Day card, a birthday card, or simply using supplies from your stash in a new way, this type of layout gives you plenty of room to experiment without overcomplicating the process.
