Welcome, Crafty Friends! Today, I’m so excited to share a birthday card project that’s truly out of this world. If you're anything like me, sometimes you want to make a card that's a little different than the usual flowers or cakes. Something that feels playful, unique, and a little unexpected. That’s where today’s project comes in — a fun, alien-themed birthday card that's sure to bring a smile.

Alien-themed card with UFO and planets on colorful background. Text: "ALIENS HAVE LANDED... I TOTALLY SPACED AND FORGOT YOUR BIRTHDAY." Playful mood.

I used several fantastic products from Scrappy Boy Stamps for this project, including the Aliens Have Landed In Roswell Stamp Set, Aliens Have Landed In Roswell Outline Dies, Aliens Have Landed In Roswell 6x6 Pattern Paper Pack, and the A2 UFO Die Set. These sets work so beautifully together and make putting together a cohesive, layered card easy and fun.

If you’ve ever felt stuck trying to find a fresh birthday card idea, this alien theme might be just the spark you need to get excited about creating again.

A UFO That's Ready to Fly

I started out by cutting all the parts and pieces for the UFO using the A2 UFO Die Set. I chose Evening Gray Cardstock for the base pieces and added some accents with White Shimmer cardstock to give that metallic, outer-space feel.

One thing I love doing when working with die cuts is adding a little subtle ink blending. It’s a simple step that really makes a difference. Here, I used Hickory Smoke Distress Ink to deepen the edges of the gray pieces. For the wheels, though, Hickory Smoke wasn’t quite dark enough, so I grabbed a little Memento Tuxedo Black Ink to deepen them up.

Pro Tip: Whenever your die cuts feel flat, a little ink blending around the edges creates dimension and makes everything look more polished — even if you’re short on time.

Assembling all the layers with liquid glue was a breeze, and before I knew it, my little UFO was ready to make its grand appearance.

Building a Playful Background

The background came together with the help of the Aliens Have Landed In Roswell 6x6 Pattern Paper Pack. I trimmed a piece down to 4" x 5¼" to fit the front of my top-folding A2 card base.

Now, I’ll admit — I used to be guilty of tossing patterned paper scraps without thinking twice. But after countless moments of needing "just a little something," I’ve gotten into the habit of using my leftovers right away.

I cut the leftover scrap into a 2" strip and a ¾" strip. The larger one became a fun banner on the front of the card to ground the sentiment, and the smaller one went inside the card for a little unexpected detail when you open it up.

Pro Tip: Adding a strip of coordinating pattern paper inside your card is such a simple way to give it a finished, professional look — and it uses up your scraps.

Coloring Our Little Alien Friend

For the focal image, I reached for the Aliens Have Landed In Roswell Stamp Set. I stamped the alien and the planet using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink, perfect for coloring with alcohol markers like my trusty OLO Markers.

For the alien, I chose bright greens (YG1.2, YG1.4, YG1.6) to give him that classic "little green man" vibe, and added a little R5.1 and R5.3 to color his helmet. I wanted him to feel cheerful and mischievous — like he had just landed to crash a birthday party.

Coloring the planet was so much fun. I blended a mix of reds (R5.1, R5.3, R5.5) and purples (BV4.2, BV4.4, BV4.5) for a vibrant look, finishing off the rings with a pop of sunny yellow (Y2.2 and Y2.3).

Pro Tip: When coloring whimsical images like aliens or planets, don’t overthink your color choices. Bright, bold combos usually work beautifully, even if they’re a little wild. It’s space — anything goes!

I then cut everything out using the Aliens Have Landed In Roswell Outline Dies, making assembly super quick.

Bringing It All Together

Once everything was colored and die-cut, it was time for the fun part — putting it all together.

I tucked the alien into the top section of the UFO, making it look like he was waving hello. The UFO itself onto the card front for a bit of dimension, and I added the planet off to the bottom right hand side to balance the layout.

For the sentiment, I stamped directly onto the 2" patterned paper strip with Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink. I love how it pulls everything together without covering too much of that adorable alien paper in the background.

And of course, I couldn’t resist adding a few white gel pen highlights and some clear overlay pen for a little extra sparkle. Tiny details like these might seem small, but they really make your images pop.

A Card That's Ready for Blastoff

This card came together so easily thanks to the coordinated products, and it’s such a fun change from the usual birthday designs. I love how playful and cheerful it feels — and I already know the perfect person to send it to. (I have a nephew who’s obsessed with anything space-related!)

If you’ve been looking for a way to make your birthday cards feel fresh and exciting again, I definitely recommend giving an alien or outer space theme a try. The colors, the textures, and the imaginative details all come together for something unforgettable.
