Raise a Mug to Dad: A Masculine Shaped Card

There’s something about a shaped card that makes an otherwise simple handmade card feel a little more special. For this project, I wanted to create a masculine card that felt fun and giftable without relying on a complicated fold or a lot of embellishments. A mug seemed like the perfect answer! It gave me a strong shape to work with while still leaving plenty of room for the sentiment and a few simple details.

Designing a Masculine Shaped Card

When I’m designing masculine cards, I tend to look for strong shapes, limited layers, and details that have a purpose. That was the thinking behind using the World's Best Mug Die Set from Scrappy Boy Stamps. The mug shape does most of the visual work, so I didn’t need to add a lot of extra decoration to make the card interesting.

The die-cut layers also give the card some structure and dimension without making it feel overly fussy. I especially like using layering on masculine cards because it creates contrast and definition while keeping the overall design clean. The black border helps the mug shape stand out, while the lighter mug panel keeps the sentiment easy to read.

Making Die Cutting Do the Design Work

One of the things I enjoy about shaped cards is that the die cut becomes part of the design itself, rather than simply being an element placed on a traditional rectangular card. That changes the way I think about the composition. Instead of asking, “What should I put on this card?” I’m asking, “How can I make this shape feel finished?”

For this card, assembling the layers carefully was important. The contrasting pieces define the mug, rim, handle, and spoon while giving the finished card a polished appearance. It’s a good reminder that you don’t always need more embellishments—sometimes a few well-planned layers can do much more.

Make It Your Own

You certainly don’t need the exact products I used to recreate the idea. If you have a mug die, coffee cup die, beer mug die, or another substantial die in your stash, you can use the same basic design concept. Even a large food or beverage die could work beautifully for a masculine shaped card.

You can also change the personality of the card with your colors and sentiment. Try kraft and black for a rustic look, navy and cream for something more classic, or use patterned paper for the mug while keeping the surrounding layers solid. If you're making a Father's Day card, birthday card, or just a card for someone who loves coffee or tea, the same shaped-card concept can be adapted to fit the occasion.

A masculine card doesn't have to be complicated to be memorable. Sometimes a strong shape, a thoughtful sentiment, and a little dimension are all you need. I hope this Raise a Mug to Dad: A Masculine Shaped Card project gives you an idea you can take back to your own craft room and make your own. Look through those dies you already have—you may be surprised by how many of them could become the starting point for a fun shaped handmade card!
