Halloween is one of my favorite times to craft because it gives us the chance to play with both spooky and silly. For this card, I wanted something that would make the recipient smile but still feel perfectly festive for the season. The solution? Pairing the adorable Boo Sheets Stamp Set with the bold Halloween Heart Stencil and finishing it off with the stitched rectangle from the EIEIO Frame Die Set by Miss Ink Stamps. The end result is a playful design that balances cute ghosts with a striking skeleton background.

A Background That Pops

Whenever I start a Halloween card, I love using black cardstock as my base layer because it instantly adds drama and makes bright colors stand out beautifully. For this card, I cut a stitched rectangle with the EIEIO Frame Die Set from a piece of Midnight Black Cardstock. Then came the fun part—bringing the background to life with the Halloween Heart Stencil.

By pouncing Brilliant White Pigment Ink through the skeleton hand openings, the design almost glowed against the dark paper. Once the ink was fully dry (a must when working with pigment ink), I added layers of Distress Oxide Inks over the heart for a glowing, eerie effect.

Pro tip: blending oxide inks over dried pigment ink creates a unique depth that looks almost illuminated. It’s one of my favorite tricks for stencils like this.

Ghostly Details with a Touch of Personality

The stars of this card are the sweet little ghosts from the Boo Sheets Stamp Set. I stamped three of them, along with the pumpkin pail, sucker, and balloon, onto Bristol Smooth Cardstock. To color them, I reached for my Karin Brush Marker Pros. These markers are wonderful for adding quick shading, especially on playful images like these.

One thing I love about whimsical stamp sets is giving each character its own personality. One ghost holds a pumpkin and a candy sucker, another floats with the “boo” balloon, and the last one makes a surprise appearance inside the card. Adding accessories not only makes the images more fun but also helps tell a little story.

Layering It All Together

To finish the design, I layered the stenciled panel onto an ivory A2 card base using foam adhesive. That slight lift makes the background feel even more dimensional. The ghosts were arranged to interact with the heart in the center, framing the sentiment “May you be scared sheetless this Halloween.”

Inside, I added the third ghost along with the playful sentiment “Holy Sheet it’s Halloween” stamped in Carved Pumpkin Distress Oxide Ink. Including a decorated inside is such a fun way to extend the design and gives your card an extra special touch when it’s opened.

Finishing Touches Matter

The final step was adding highlights with a white gel pen and scattering a few Fright Night Pearls across the card front. These small details might seem minor, but they’re what take a handmade card from simple to polished.

Pro tip: when adding embellishments, cluster them around focal points to keep the eye moving across the design without distracting from the main images.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever struggled with making Halloween cards that are festive but not too frightening, this combination of products is the perfect solution. The Halloween Heart Stencil provides bold impact, while the Boo Sheets Stamp Set keeps things light hearted and fun. Pairing them with the versatile EIEIO Frame Die Set creates a clean, finished look that works beautifully for this style of card.

I love how this design came together, and it reminded me that sometimes the best cards happen when you mix bold backgrounds with cute, playful images. If you’re making Halloween cards this year, I encourage you to try out a dramatic stencil paired with an adorable character set—you may just end up with a card that’s both spooky and smile-worthy.
