As the air turns crisp and the first flurries of snow begin to fall, I can’t help but feel inspired by all things winter. There’s something so magical about snowy scenes, and today’s card captures that perfectly with the adorable Mice Winter Stamp Set from C. C. Designs. These sweet little mice, bundled up and hard at work in their winter wonderland, instantly stole my heart. Let me walk you through how this card came together, along with some tips and tricks to make your winter cards truly shine.
Snowy Winter Wishes:
Creating the Star of the Show
The mouse pushing his wheelbarrow full of a cheery snowman was too cute to resist! I stamped the image onto Neenah Solar White 80 lbs Cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink. For coloring, I reached for my trusty Ohuhu Honolulu Brush Markers. I love how these markers make it easy to achieve smooth blends and vibrant colors, even on smaller images like this one. One of my favorite tricks when coloring characters is to leave a small white highlight on the edges of the snowman’s body—it’s a simple detail that makes the snow look frosty and dimensional.
Once the image was all colored, I fussy cut it out using my snips. Fussy cutting might feel a bit tedious at times, but for me, it’s almost meditative. Plus, it’s worth the effort to have those crisp, clean edges that make the image pop off the card.
Adding a Wintery Background
No snowy scene is complete without a backdrop to set the tone. I reached for a piece of Shimmer White Cardstock cut to 4” x 5 1/4”. To create a soft, frosty circle in the center, I used the largest stencil from the Background Basics Stencils by Penny Black. With Tumbled Glass and Faded Jeans Distress Inks, I blended a gradient that’s both subtle and striking. The shimmer in the cardstock adds a hint of sparkle that reminds me of sunlight glinting off fresh snow.
Here’s a pro tip: when blending ink on shimmer cardstock, use light pressure and circular motions to avoid streaks. Shimmer cardstock has a slightly slick surface, so going slow ensures a smooth blend.
To add more interest, I applied silver snowflakes from the Snowflakes Metallic Rub-On Transfers. I cut apart the individual snowflakes before placing them in the circle, which helped me create a balanced and dynamic look. Concentrating the snowflakes within the stenciled area makes it feel like the mouse and snowman are standing in their own little snow globe.
Assembling the Card
Once the background was complete, I adhered it to a top-folding A2 card base. For dimension, I used foam adhesive squares to add the cut-out mouse and his wheelbarrow to the card. Placing the image slightly off-center gave the design a playful, dynamic feel. The sentiment, “Snowy Winter Wishes,” was stamped onto a scrap of Neenah Solar White Cardstock using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink. After fussy cutting the sentiment, I tucked it behind the snowman’s hat, ensuring it’s readable while also blending seamlessly with the scene.
Finishing Touches
The final details are always my favorite part. Using a Milky Pop White Gel Pen, I added highlights to the mouse, snowman, and wheelbarrow. These tiny touches of white make the images feel polished and professional. If you’re ever unsure where to add highlights, think about where light might naturally hit—on the tops of heads, along edges, and on shiny surfaces.
