If you’ve ever sat down to make a card and completely stalled out at the color stage… you are absolutely not alone. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a stamped image ready to go, markers in hand, and still couldn’t decide what colors to use. That kind of overwhelm can take all the fun out of creating.

Today’s card is all about removing that guesswork and replacing it with a simple, repeatable approach that gives you bold, balanced results every time.

What Is a Triadic Color Scheme?

A triadic color scheme is one of those techniques that sounds more complicated than it actually is. In the simplest terms, it’s a combination of three colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel.

What I love about this approach is that it naturally creates contrast and harmony at the same time. You get bright, eye-catching color combinations without things feeling chaotic or mismatched. It’s especially helpful for cardmakers because it takes the pressure off trying to “guess” what works.

How I Chose My Colors

For this card, I reached for my Palette Scout, which makes choosing a triadic color scheme incredibly easy. Instead of overthinking it, I simply selected a palette that already had that balanced combination built in.

From there, I pulled colors that gave me:

  • A warm yellow/orange for the background and florals

  • A pop of pink for the accents

  • A bold teal for contrast

You can see how those three colors play together beautifully in the finished card. The bright yellow background immediately draws your eye, while the pink and teal details add interest and keep everything feeling fresh and vibrant.

This is one of my favorite ways to work—start with a palette, then build your project around it.

Coloring the Image with Alcohol Markers

Once I had my color direction, I matched my OLO Markers as closely as possible to the palette I chose. This step doesn’t have to be exact—just aim for a similar tone and intensity.

For the florals from the Fabulous Fuchsias Stamps and Die Bundle, I focused on:

  • Layering lighter and darker shades within the same color family

  • Keeping my blends soft so the colors stay clean and not muddy

  • Letting each color shine instead of over-blending everything together

One thing I like to keep in mind with triadic color schemes is balance. Since the colors are naturally bold, I try not to overwork them. A few simple blends and highlights go a long way.

And of course… I couldn’t resist adding a little sparkle for that finishing touch!

Clean and Simple Design That Lets Color Shine

For the overall design, I kept things clean and simple so the color palette could really take center stage.

The soft ink-blended yellow background creates a glowing effect behind the florals, while the white space keeps everything feeling light and uncluttered. By placing the florals toward the top of the card, it naturally draws your eye upward, and the sentiment at the bottom balances everything out.

The teal sentiment ties back to the color palette perfectly, creating a cohesive look without adding extra layers or bulk.

This is a great reminder that you don’t need a complicated layout when your color choices are doing the heavy lifting.

Build Confidence with Color

If choosing colors has ever felt overwhelming, I really encourage you to give triadic color schemes a try. Tools like the Palette Scout make it so much easier to get started, and once you see how well the colors work together, it builds confidence quickly.

The best part? You can use this approach with any stamps, markers, or supplies you already have in your stash.
