Warm Winter Wishes:

Inspiration and Concept

Winter has always been one of my favorite seasons to craft for. There's something magical about the chill in the air and the sparkle of snow, even if you're just imagining it from your cozy craft room. For this card, I wanted to create a scene that felt like a peaceful winter wonderland. The Sliding By Stamp Set was the perfect choice with its charming penguin on ice skates and sweet little pine trees. Who doesn't love a penguin, right?

The Perfect Ink Choices

When it comes to stamping, the choice of ink can make a big difference in the final look of your project. For this card, I opted for Shadow Grey Archival Ink to stamp the images on Canson XL Watercolor Paper. This ink gives a softer, more subtle outline, which complements the gentle winter theme. If you're someone who loves a bolder outline, you might prefer using Versafine Onyx Black Ink. Both options work beautifully, depending on the mood you're aiming for.

Pro Tip: If you're working with water-based coloring mediums like I did, make sure to use a waterproof ink to prevent any smudging.

Watercolor Magic with Twimarkers

Now, let's talk about adding color! I used my Twimarkers to add a watercolor effect to the stamped images. These markers are great for achieving a soft, blended look, especially when paired with a Princeton Heritage Round Size 4 Brush and a little water. I love how versatile Twimarkers are; they're perfect for everything from detailed work to broad washes of color.

As I painted, I couldn't help but think about all the times I've watched penguins glide gracefully on ice. It always amazes me how such cute, waddling creatures can be so elegant on skates! This little penguin, with his cozy scarf, brings that same sense of joy and wonder to the card.

Crafting the Background: Texture and Dimension

Creating a textured background can really elevate a card design. For this project, I used the Ski Lodge Embossing Folder on a piece of watercolor paper to add a subtle, snowy texture. I then gently inked over the embossed areas with Speckled Egg and Iced Spruce Distress Inks using a Flat Foam Blending Tool. This technique highlights the raised areas and adds depth, making the scene feel more immersive.

Pro Tip: When blending inks, start with a light hand and gradually build up the color. This way, you can avoid any harsh lines and achieve a smooth, gradient effect.

Assembling the Winter Scene

Once all the elements were ready, it was time to bring the scene together. I die-cut a circle from the Stitched Mini Scallop Circle STAX Die-namics and did some ink blending on the inner circle. I love the soft transition from the cool tones of Speckled Egg and Iced Spruce to the warm, earthy hue of Memento Toffee Crunch Ink. It really sets the stage for our little penguin friend.

After layering the inked circle onto the scalloped circle with foam tape for some added dimension, I positioned the pine trees and penguin on the card front. The combination of Bearly Art Liquid Glue and foam tape helped to create a sense of depth, making the penguin pop against the background.

Adding the Sentiment and Finishing Touches

No card is complete without a heartfelt sentiment. For this card, I used WOW! Slow Drying Embossing Ink and Opaque Bright White Super Fine Embossing Powder to create a crisp, white sentiment banner. The contrast of the bright white against the subtle inked background really draws the eye.

To finish off the card, I added a sprinkle of Fairy Dust Rhinestones. These little gems add just the right amount of sparkle, like a dusting of snowflakes. It's these small details that really make a card feel special and complete.
