Every year, when the 4th of July rolls around, I find myself pulling out the same supplies — stars, stripes, and lots of red, white, and blue. And while there's nothing wrong with the classics, sometimes I just want something that feels fresh but still festive. This year, I decided to shake things up a bit and create a card that's patriotic and sweet, using some favorite products from The Rabbit Hole Designs.

If you've ever found yourself stuck in a rut with your holiday cards, you're going to love this twist. Today’s card features the Sentimentally Speaking Holidays Bundle, the Berry Best Stamp Set and Die Set, the Aim For the Stars Stencil, and a few Clear Sparkle Enamel Dots to pull it all together.

And let me tell you — it turned out so fun and full of dimension.

Happy 4th of July Card: Sentimentally Speaking Holidays Bundle:

The Sweetest Twist on Traditional Colors

Instead of leaning heavily on bold stars and stripes, I brought in a softer touch with the Berry Best Stamp Set. I stamped two of the strawberry wreaths using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink from my stash and colored them with my trusty Copic Markers. There's something about coloring strawberries in those rich reds that instantly makes me think of summer picnics, family gatherings, and fireworks at dusk.

Pro Tip: When coloring smaller images like berries and leaves, using a lighter hand and flicking motions with your markers can really help blend the colors beautifully without over-saturating the paper.

After cutting them out with the Berry Best Die Set, I knew I wanted to frame the card around these wreaths — but I also wanted to bring in some traditional elements like stars. That's where the Aim For the Stars Stencil came into play.

Creating a Background with Texture and Interest

Sometimes a full stenciled background can feel a little heavy, especially on a card that's supposed to feel light and celebratory. Instead, I grabbed some scraps of red, white, and blue cardstock (I always keep a little scrap bin nearby for moments like this) and embossed each one using the Aim For the Stars 6x6 Stencil.

Pro Tip: If you’ve never dry embossed with a stencil before, it’s such a fun way to add texture without adding extra color. You simply run your stencil and cardstock through your die-cut machine with an embossing mat — quick and easy!

I layered these three strips in the center of a piece of Neenah Solar White 80 lb Cardstock cut to 4" x 5 ¼" and trimmed off the excess. This created a strong, vertical anchor for the rest of the card while still feeling airy and bright.

Layering for Depth and Dimension

To add even more interest, I cut one of the strawberry wreaths apart and tucked the pieces above and below the stenciled strips. Then, I popped the second wreath up on foam adhesive right in the center.

I love the trick of layering die-cut images like this — it creates instant depth without a lot of extra work. Plus, it makes the design feel full without overcrowding the card.

Once the main elements were in place, I attached the whole panel to a top-folding A2 card base made with heavy 110 lb cardstock, which helps support all the layers and embellishments.

A Special Touch with Vellum and Heat Embossing

For the sentiment, I wanted something that stood out but still let the beautiful design shine through. I used a strip of vellum, prepped it with my CottonTail Powder Tool (an absolute must-have when heat embossing on vellum!), and stamped "Happy 4th of July" from the Sentimentally Speaking Holidays Bundle in Versamark Ink.

After covering it with White Detail Embossing Powder and heat setting it, I die-cut the sentiment using the coordinating die from the bundle. Once it cooled, I attached it over the wreath using tiny pieces of foam tape hidden behind the thicker parts of the lettering.

Pro Tip: When attaching vellum, hiding your adhesive is key. Foam tape behind embossed areas or behind embellishments works perfectly to keep everything looking clean.

Finishing Touches That Shine

To bring everything together, I added a few highlights to the strawberries and leaves with a white gel pen. It’s a tiny detail, but it adds so much life to your coloring. I also sprinkled a few Clear Sparkle Enamel Dots around the sentiment for a little bit of celebratory shimmer without overwhelming the design.

And just like that — a 4th of July card that's patriotic, festive, and a little bit different than the usual!

Why This Card Stands Out

One of the things I love most about this design is that it balances traditional colors with unexpected elements. It still says "Happy 4th!" loud and clear, but it does it in a way that's soft, inviting, and just a little sweet — like summer itself.

Using stencils, vellum, die cuts, and embossing together might seem like a lot at first, but they all come together to create a layered, cohesive look that's so satisfying to put together.

If you’re looking for a way to mix things up with your holiday crafting this year, I highly encourage you to give this idea a try. Sometimes the best cards come from combining traditional themes with a little bit of creative play!
