There’s something really satisfying about creating a card that looks polished and complete… without adding a single layer. I’ll be honest—one layer cards used to feel a little limiting to me. I love dimension, texture, and all the extras. But over time, I’ve come to appreciate how much impact you can create with just thoughtful stamping and simple coloring.

This little bunny card was one of those projects where less really did become more. And if you’ve ever felt unsure about clean and simple designs, this is a great example of how a few intentional choices can make everything come together beautifully.

Why This Design Works

When I started this card, I knew I wanted the image to do most of the heavy lifting. The Clever Cottontail Stamp Set from Unity Stamps has just the right amount of detail to stand on its own, which makes it perfect for a one layer card.

Instead of placing everything front and center, I shifted the bunny slightly to the side and added the sentiment in the top right corner. That small decision creates movement across the card and keeps your eye engaged. It’s a simple layout trick, but it makes a big difference—especially when you’re not relying on layers to build interest.

The color palette also plays a huge role here. I stayed within a few coordinated color families—warm browns for the bunny, soft pinks, and blue turquoise tones. Keeping the colors cohesive helps the card feel calm and intentional instead of busy.

And then there’s the background… or lack of one. Rather than leaving it completely white or filling it in, I added a soft halo of color around the bunny. It’s subtle, but it helps frame the image and gives it just enough presence on the card front.

Simple Techniques That Make a Big Impact

This card really comes down to two main techniques: stamping and simple alcohol marker coloring—but it’s how they’re used together that matters.

Clean Stamping Sets the Tone

With a one layer card, your stamped image is the foundation. A crisp, well-placed impression instantly makes everything feel more polished. I always take an extra second here to make sure my placement feels balanced before I commit.

Coloring with Intention (Not Complexity)

You don’t need complicated blends to get a beautiful result. Using markers that are already grouped into coordinated shades makes blending feel much more approachable. I focused on soft transitions and let the colors build naturally instead of trying to force contrast.

Grounding the Image

One of my favorite little tricks is adding a simple shadow under the image. It gives the character a place to “stand” and keeps it from feeling like it’s floating on the card.

The Power of a Halo

That soft glow around the bunny might be my favorite part. It’s such an easy way to add depth without adding layers. If you’ve never tried this, start light—you can always build more color, but it’s harder to take it away.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

This card was a good reminder that restraint can be a creative tool.

There was definitely a moment where I considered adding embellishments or another layer. But stepping back and asking, “Does it need anything else?” helped me keep the design clean and focused.

Another little takeaway? Don’t underestimate finishing details. A few white gel pen highlights might seem small, but they bring the whole image to life. Those tiny touches can elevate even the simplest designs.

How You Can Make This Your Own

This layout is incredibly versatile, which makes it perfect for using what you already have.

Switch Up the Image

Any character-style stamp will work here. Look for something with enough detail to stand on its own, and let that be your focal point.

Change the Color Story

Try soft pastels for a spring feel, or go bolder with deeper tones for a completely different look. Even sticking to monochromatic shades can create a really elegant result.

Play with Placement

If off-center feels uncomfortable, try centering your image and placing the sentiment underneath. You’ll still get that clean and simple look—just with a slightly different balance.

Use What You Have for Coloring

Alcohol markers are great for smooth blends, but they’re not the only option. Colored pencils or even light watercoloring can give you a similar soft effect. The key is keeping your shading intentional and not overworking it.

A Little Encouragement to Wrap It Up

If you’ve been hesitant to try one layer cards, I hope this gives you a little nudge to give them a go. They’re such a great way to build confidence in your stamping and coloring without feeling overwhelmed by layers and extras.

And remember—simple doesn’t mean boring. Sometimes it just means you’re letting the details shine in a different way.

Give it a try, trust your instincts, and most importantly… have fun with it.
