Fun fold cards are one of my favorite ways to add that wow factor to a handmade card without making things complicated—and today’s Pop Up Block Fun Fold Valentine card is a perfect example of that. This design looks interactive and impressive, but it’s built with simple folds, layered pattern paper, and a few well-chosen dies and stamps.

If you enjoy creating cards that fold flat for mailing but pop open with a little surprise, this fun fold design is one you’ll want to keep in your idea files.
Why I Love the Pop Up Block Fun Fold Design
What makes the Pop Up Block Fun Fold so appealing is the balance between structure and creativity. The folded “block” inside the card creates instant dimension, while the outer panels give you plenty of room to play with pattern paper and sentiments.
This style of card is especially great for Valentine’s Day because it allows you to showcase coordinating papers without overwhelming the design. Instead of overthinking embellishments or coloring, the focus stays on clean layers and strong contrast—which makes it very approachable for beginner to intermediate cardmakers.

Pattern Paper Takes Center Stage
For this project, I leaned heavily into pattern paper to do the visual work for me. The Candy Treats 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pack from Paper Rose Studio is perfect for fun fold cards because the patterns coordinate beautifully while still offering enough variation to separate each panel.
Using pattern paper in a structured design like this is a great confidence booster. You don’t need advanced techniques—just thoughtful placement and clean cuts. The Pop Up Block Fun Fold naturally creates sections, making it easier to mix patterns without things feeling busy.

Sentiments That Work With the Fold
Because fun fold cards already have a lot going on, I like to keep the sentiment work clean and intentional. The Stacked Sentiments No. 2 Stamp Set paired with the Sentiment Banner Strips Metal Dies makes it easy to add polished greetings that fit the card’s structure.
I stamped my sentiments using Black Hybrid Ink and Poppy Ink, which gives crisp impressions and ties in beautifully with the Valentine color palette. Using banner-style dies helps guide placement so the sentiment enhances the design rather than competing with it.

Cardstock Choices That Support the Design
A strong base makes all the difference with interactive cards. I used Basic White A4 Cardstock for stability, then added Cherry Blossom Pink (from the Baby's Dreams A4 Assorted Cardstock Pack) and Christmas Red (from the Bright & Happy A4 Assorted Cardstock Pack) to reinforce the Valentine theme.
These cardstock colors layer cleanly and give the pattern paper a solid foundation, which is especially important when the card opens and closes multiple times.

A Fun Fold That Builds Confidence
If you’ve ever felt intimidated by interactive cards, this is a great place to start. The Pop Up Block Fun Fold looks detailed, but once you see how the folds work together, it becomes very manageable—and honestly, kind of addictive!
This is the type of design that lets you stretch your supplies, build confidence, and still end up with a card that feels special and gift-worthy.
