Simon Says Stamp Stay True Stamp Set Card with Turnabout Stamping Technique

Sometimes the best backgrounds come from the supplies you already have—you just need to look at them a little differently. That’s exactly what happened with today’s card. I started with the Stay True Stamp Set and instead of using the sentiments as a focal point, I challenged myself to turn them into the background. The result is a bold, encouraging handmade card that feels layered and detailed, but is actually built on a very simple idea.

Creating a Background with Sentiments
One of my favorite ways to stretch a stamp set is to rethink its purpose. Sentiment stamps are usually designed to be the star of the show, but they can also create incredible backgrounds—especially when you repeat and rotate them.
For this card, I used a turnabout-style stamping approach, rotating my panel as I stamped in different colors. This creates that playful, almost patterned look without needing a traditional background stamp. I chose a mix of bright, happy colors—yellow, green, purple, and soft pink—to keep the overall feel uplifting and encouraging, which pairs perfectly with the message.
What I love about this technique is that it adds energy to the card without adding bulk. You get a full, eye-catching background while still keeping things relatively flat and mailable.

Balancing Bold and Soft Elements
With a background this busy, I knew I needed to create a place for the eye to rest. That’s where the layered die cuts come in.
The stitched circle and square layers help break up the background and give the floral element a defined space to shine. I kept the flower soft and slightly dimensional with gentle ink blending, which contrasts nicely with the bold, graphic sentiment panel.
That tall sentiment strip on the right acts almost like an anchor. It grounds the design and reinforces the message in a strong, readable way. When you’re working with a lot of color and pattern, having one solid, high-contrast element like this can make all the difference.

Why This Technique Works
This style of turnabout stamping works so well because it combines repetition with variation. You’re using the same stamps, but the rotation and color changes keep it from feeling repetitive or flat.
It’s also a great option if you:
Don’t have a lot of background stamps
Want to stretch a sentiment-heavy set
Enjoy a clean and simple card layout with a bit of personality
Plus, it gives you a lot of control. You can go bold with bright colors like I did here, or tone it down with neutrals for a more subtle look.

Make It Your Own
If you’re thinking about trying this idea, there are so many ways to adapt it based on what you already have:
Swap sentiments for small icons or images to create a different kind of pattern
Use tone-on-tone ink for a softer, more elegant background
Keep the layout but change the focal point—try a butterfly, heart, or even a layered sentiment
Skip the die cuts and keep everything flat for a true clean and simple card
This is one of those techniques that grows with you. It works just as well for beginners as it does for more experienced cardmakers looking to stretch their stash.

A Little Encouragement
Cards like this remind me that creativity doesn’t always come from having more—it often comes from seeing what you already own in a new way. A simple shift in how you use a stamp set can completely change the outcome.
So the next time you’re at your craft desk, take a second look at those sentiment stamps. You might just find your next favorite background hiding in plain sight. And just like the message on this card—keep going, keep creating, and stay true to your style.
