Halloween is one of my favorite times to create cards because it gives me the perfect excuse to mix spooky with sweet. I love that balance where a card feels festive and atmospheric, but still has a touch of charm that makes you smile. For this project, I pulled out the Boo Crew Stamp Set and EIEIO Frame Die Set from Miss Ink Stamps to create a glowing night sky scene that’s both eerie and playful. The end result is a card that feels like you’re peeking into a little trick-or-treating adventure right at the gates of a haunted house.

A Night Sky That Steals the Show
The first thing I wanted for this card was a bold background that really set the tone. Distress Oxide inks are my go-to for backgrounds like this because they blend so beautifully and give you that soft, glowing transition of color. Once the sky was blended, I flicked on a bit of water for texture. This simple step never fails to impress—it instantly transforms an ordinary inked panel into a starry sky. I’ve been making cards for years, and that moment when the water droplets lift the color still feels like magic every single time.
Pro Tip: If your ink blend looks a little rough in spots, don’t stress. The water flicks not only add stars, but they also disguise imperfections and make the sky look more natural.

Setting the Spooky Scene
The Boo Crew Stamp Set has a wonderfully detailed gate and tree image, and it was exactly what I needed to bring that eerie atmosphere to life. Stamping it in the background instantly grounded the sky and gave the card its “spooky factor.” I like that it fills the space without needing extra layers—it creates depth but keeps the card easy to put together. If you’ve ever struggled with cards feeling “unfinished,” try adding a strong background stamp like this—it’s a game-changer.

Meet the Boo Crew
Of course, no Halloween card is complete without some trick-or-treaters. I chose three of the critters from the Boo Crew set and kept the coloring simple with my OLO markers. Sometimes I find myself wanting to overcomplicate the coloring, but honestly, these images are so charming on their own that a light touch is all they need. Once colored, I fussy cut each one and lined them up at the gate as if they were headed inside for candy.
Pro Tip: When your background is bold, keep your images simple. It lets the whole design breathe and draws the eye to the scene as a whole, rather than competing for attention.

Finishing Touches That Make a Difference
For the sentiment, I layered a stamped “Trick or Treat” above the gate and added a die cut “BOO” in bright glittery cardstock from the EIEIO Frame Die Set. That combination gave the card both dimension and a pop of shine. To push it even further, I added glow-in-the-dark embellishments. They’re such a fun surprise for the recipient—when the lights go out, the card still has a little something to say. A few white gel pen highlights brought extra life to the critters and tied the whole design together.
On the inside of the card, I carried the theme through with another sentiment and two more Boo Crew friends—a snail and spider dressed as ghosts. I’ve always loved tucking a little surprise inside a card. It’s like a second treat that rewards the recipient for opening it up.

Why This Card Works
When it comes to Halloween cardmaking, it can be tricky to strike the right balance. Too spooky, and it doesn’t feel warm and fun; too simple, and it misses the magic of the season. What I love about this design is how it brings those elements together. The Distress Oxide night sky sets the mood, the Boo Crew critters keep it lighthearted, and the glow-in-the-dark accents make it memorable. And the best part? It’s approachable. With simple coloring, minimal fussy cutting, and a few key details, you end up with a card that looks intricate but is actually stress-free to make.

Final Thoughts
Halloween cards are such a joy to create because they allow you to play with techniques you might not use any other time of year. Ink blending, dramatic stamping, and playful critters all come together to make something that’s fun for you to create and delightful for someone else to receive. I hope this inspires you to try a spooky nighttime scene of your own with the Boo Crew Stamp Set and EIEIO Frame Die Set from Miss Ink Stamps. And if you do, don’t forget to add a little surprise inside—it’s those small details that turn a handmade card into something unforgettable.
