Spring Wildflowers Watercolor Card: Video Tutorial | Miss Ink Stamps

Writer: Rick AdkinsRick Adkins

Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to welcome it than with a delicate watercolor floral card? Today, I’m sharing a design that combines soft, painterly florals with a layered ink-blended background for a look that’s both elegant and effortless. I used the Wildflower Stamp Set and the Wildflower Coordinating Dies from Miss Ink Stamps along with a few stencils to create a dreamy, spring-inspired card. If you love watercoloring but sometimes struggle with achieving that soft, blended effect, you’re going to love this project!

Spring Wildflowers Watercolor Card:

Creating the Watercolor Wildflowers

There’s something so relaxing about watercoloring florals—it’s forgiving, fun, and no two results are ever the same. I stamped both wildflower bunches from the Wildflower Stamp Set onto Canson XL Watercolor Paper using Memento Toffee Crunch Ink. This softer ink choice blends beautifully with watercoloring, giving a no-line effect without harsh outlines.

For coloring, I reached for my Distress Ink Reinkers. If you’ve never used reinkers as watercolors, they are a game changer! The pigments are rich and blend effortlessly. I love that I can control the intensity just by adding more or less water. If you ever feel like your colors are too harsh or not blending the way you’d like, try working in light layers—letting each dry slightly before adding more depth.

Once the watercoloring was complete, I used the Wildflower Coordinating Die Set to cut out the images. Having matching dies makes assembling a card so much easier, especially when dealing with intricate floral shapes.

Building a Soft & Dimensional Background

A great background can really make your focal images shine, and for this card, I wanted something subtle yet interesting. I started with another piece of Canson XL Watercolor Paper cut to 4” x 5 1/4” and placed the largest stencil from the Scalloped Arch Stencils set over it.

To create a soft sky effect, I blended Tumbled Glass Distress Ink over the open area, then deepened the edges with Broken China Distress Ink. I love using multiple shades of the same color to add depth—this small detail makes a huge difference in making the background feel dimensional rather than flat.

For a bit of warmth and contrast, I added Toffee Crunch Ink lightly to the top left and bottom right corners. This small touch ties in beautifully with the vintage-inspired watercolor florals.

Then, while keeping the Scalloped Arch Stencil in place, I layered the Leafy Swirls Stencil over it and blended Broken China Distress Ink for a soft pattern. This double-stenciling technique is such an easy way to add texture without overwhelming the design.

Pro Tip: If you ever feel like your background needs a little extra something, layering stencils is a fantastic way to create interest while keeping everything cohesive!

Adding the Sentiment & Finishing Touches

I love when a card comes together with just the right sentiment, and this one from the Wildflower Stamp Set was perfect. I stamped it in Versafine Onyx Black Ink using my Mini Misti for crisp, bold results.

To assemble the card, I adhered the ink-blended panel onto a top-folding A2 card base using 1mm Thick 1" Wide foam tape—just enough dimension to make it pop without adding bulk. Then, I arranged the two wildflower bunches on either side of the arch, securing them with foam adhesive for extra depth. I trimmed any overhanging edges for a clean, polished look.

For the final details, I added delicate white gel pen highlights to some of the petals and leaves. This subtle touch brings the watercoloring to life by enhancing the highlights and creating contrast. A few Vintage Love Gem Stickers scattered around the sentiment added just the right amount of sparkle without overpowering the design.

This card was such a joy to make—soft florals, stenciled layers, and just the right amount of dimension. If you love watercoloring but don’t want to spend hours on a single image, this technique is a great way to get that hand-painted look without the fuss.
