Sometimes the best cards are the ones that let a single element do most of the work. When I’m working with a fun character stamp, I often find that a clean and simple layout is the best way to highlight the image without competing with it. That was exactly the goal behind today’s card—creating a playful, comic-inspired design that feels polished while still being easy to put together.
For this project, I leaned into a character-focused design with Copic coloring and just a small touch of patterned paper to bring in color and personality. The idea was to keep the layout simple so the stamped image could really shine. I walked through the process in the video so you can see how everything comes together visually, but I also wanted to share some of the design thinking behind the choices here on the blog.

Let the Character Be the Star
When you’re working with character stamps, especially ones with expressive personalities, the biggest design decision is often how much is too much. It can be tempting to add layers, textures, and lots of embellishments, but sometimes those extras compete with the focal image.
The Shamy Stamp Set from C. C. Designs worked especially well for this project because the character already carries so much personality. With expressive features and a playful pose, the image naturally becomes the focal point. Instead of building a complicated background, I chose to keep the design clean so that the coloring and character details stay front and center.
This is one of my favorite approaches for clean and simple cardmaking—choose one element that deserves the spotlight and allow the rest of the design to support it rather than compete with it.

Why Pattern Paper Works in Clean & Simple Designs
Even when I’m creating a clean and simple card, I still like to include a small pop of patterned paper. It’s an easy way to introduce color and energy without adding extra layers or complicated techniques.
For this card, the Blast Off 6×6 Pattern Paper from Echo Park added a bright, playful strip along the bottom of the card. Because the pattern already contains multiple colors, it helps tie the design together and reinforces the fun comic-style theme. At the same time, limiting the pattern to a small section keeps the card from feeling busy.
This approach solves a common challenge many cardmakers face:How do you add interest to a clean and simple card without overwhelming it?
A narrow strip of patterned paper is often all you need.

Keeping Copic Coloring Simple and Effective
Another key part of this card is the Copic coloring. When coloring cartoon-style stamped images, I like to focus on smooth blends and simple shading rather than overcomplicating things.
Cartoon characters often benefit from bold color choices and defined shadows, but they don’t necessarily require complex multi-layer blends. Keeping the coloring simple helps maintain that fun illustrated style while also making the technique approachable for beginner to intermediate cardmakers.
This is especially helpful when you want your card to feel quick, approachable, and repeatable—which is one of the strengths of clean and simple designs.

A Layout You Can Use Again and Again
One of the things I appreciate most about this layout is how flexible it is. Once you have the basic idea—a focal image, a small patterned paper accent, and a simple sentiment—you can adapt it to almost any stamp set.
If you’re working from your own stash, here are a few easy ways to customize the idea:
Swap the character image for animals, florals, or seasonal stamps
Change the patterned paper to match different occasions
Adjust the sentiment to create birthday, thank you, or encouragement cards
Try different coloring mediums if you don’t use alcohol markers
The structure stays the same, but the finished card can look completely different depending on the supplies you choose.
That’s one of the reasons I enjoy clean and simple cardmaking so much—it removes the pressure of complicated layouts and lets you focus on creativity.

Encouragement for Your Next Card
If you’ve ever felt unsure about how to design around a character stamp, this approach can make the process much easier. Focus on the image, keep the layout simple, and add just a small accent to bring everything together.
Cardmaking doesn’t have to be complicated to be impactful. Often, the simplest designs are the ones that highlight your creativity the best.
