Turn Simple Stencils Into Beautiful Cards

Sometimes the simplest supplies can create the biggest impact. That's exactly what I discovered while making today's pair of handmade cards featuring two of the July free gift stencils from Miss Ink Stamps. By combining bold ink blending with clean stencil designs, I was able to create two completely different cards—a colorful zebra birthday card and a tropical-inspired hello card—without relying on complicated techniques or lots of layers.
I wanted to walk through these projects on video because seeing the ink blending process in action makes it much easier to understand how the colors come together. Here on the blog, though, I wanted to share some of the design choices behind these cards and why this approach is one I come back to again and again. If you're looking for beginner-friendly cardmaking ideas that deliver impressive results, I think you'll enjoy these projects.

Let the Stencil Do the Heavy Lifting
One of my favorite things about working with detailed stencils is that they provide much of the design for you. Instead of wondering how to fill an entire card front, you can focus on choosing colors and letting the artwork shine.
The July 2026 6x6 Free With Purchase Stencil (Zebras) is a perfect example. The flowing stripes naturally guide your eye across the card, so even a simple rainbow ink blend creates movement and interest. I didn't need patterned paper, embossing, or multiple layers because the stencil itself became the focal point.
The July 2026 4x4 Thank You Stencil (Polynesian Heart) works a little differently, but just as effectively. The combination of tropical-inspired patterns inside the heart creates plenty of visual detail while still leaving lots of open space around the design. That clean layout makes it easy to add a sentiment without the card feeling crowded.
It's a great reminder that sometimes the best design decision is knowing when to stop adding more.

Why Ink Blending Is Such a Versatile Technique
Ink blending is one of those cardmaking techniques that grows with you. Beginners can create beautiful backgrounds with just a few colors, while more experienced cardmakers can experiment with larger color palettes and smoother transitions.
For these cards, I chose a rainbow blend because it emphasizes the flowing lines within both stencil designs. Bright colors also help create a cheerful feeling that's perfect for birthdays and everyday hello cards.
One mistake I often see is trying to achieve full color coverage immediately. Building your color gradually almost always produces smoother blends and gives you more control over the finished look. It's a slower approach, but it's also much more forgiving.

Small Details Make a Big Difference
One detail that often gets overlooked is sentiment placement. A beautifully blended background can lose some of its impact if the greeting feels slightly off-center or uneven.
That's why I reached for the Eieio Alpha Placement Guide and the Modern Typeset Frame Die Placement Guide. These tools take the guesswork out of positioning die-cut sentiments, making it much easier to create clean, balanced layouts. But I used them today as sentiment stencils instead of with die-cut letters. Which makes both placement guide a little more versatile.
Those little design decisions may seem minor, but they contribute to a finished card that feels polished and intentional.

Make This Idea Your Own
One of the reasons I enjoy projects like these is how easy they are to adapt using supplies you already have.
Instead of a rainbow palette, try:
Soft pastels for spring cards
Warm earth tones for masculine cards
Bright tropical colors for summer
Traditional red and green for holiday cards
Monochromatic shades for an elegant look
The same layout would also work beautifully with floral stencils, geometric designs, seasonal images, or even holiday-themed backgrounds. Once you find a layout that works, you can repeat it throughout the year simply by changing the stencil, colors, and sentiment.
If you're picking up the July promotion from Miss Ink Stamps, you'll have two fun stencil designs to experiment with. The July 2026 6x6 Free With Purchase Stencil (Zebras) is included with any qualifying $50 order, while the July 2026 4x4 Thank You Stencil (Polynesian Heart) is included as a thank-you gift with every order. They're both versatile additions that can be used for far more than the projects I've shared today.

Don't Overthink It
If there's one lesson I'd love for you to take away from these cards, it's that you don't need dozens of techniques to create something eye-catching. A well-designed stencil, thoughtful color choices, and a simple layout can produce cards that look polished while still being enjoyable to make.
Give yourself permission to experiment with different color combinations and stencil designs. Some of my favorite cards have come from simply asking, "What happens if I try this?" That's where creativity really begins.
I'd love to hear which of these two cards is your favorite—the bold zebra birthday card or the tropical hello card. Let me know in the comments, and if you create your own version, I'd love to see how you make the idea uniquely yours.
